From daily life experience, many students have shown their creative insights at Khanh Hoa Provincial Creation Contest on Environmental Protection Solutions 2017.

Creative ideas and solutions

With used materials and scrap metals such as small pieces of wood, pipes, fans taken from broken fridges, etc, 2 students named Vu Khanh Hung and Dinh Vo Thuy Tien, Phan Boi Chau High School, Cam Ranh City created an automatic incubator, which contains a transformer, a hatching tray, rotary motors, water fans, heaters (including a fan and an incandescent bulb) and a thermal sensor to maintain stable temperature and humidity. A real-life test at home for 19-21 days shows the product efficiency at 90% on an average. "The product is very easy to make and operate. It is effective and the cost is lower than the market price. We hope this machine will be widely applied so as to solve the economic problem of poultry producers," says Dinh Vo Thuy Tien.

To make the video “Mother Nature’s speaking and how we act”, Tran Vo Thien Nhan and Le Thach Bach at Lac Long Quan High School (Khanh Vinh district) spent much time and effort to conduct a survey and collect images of environmental pollution in the neighborhood. The video also included interviews with teachers and students to promote public awareness of environmental protection. Vo Thanh Han at Nguyen Binh Khiem High School, Khanh Vinh District suggested putting classification dustbins to facilitate trash collection and recycling to produce environmentally-friendly items. Perforated plastic bottles can be used for watering; painted and shaped plastic containers for growing vegetables and flowers; wheels used as hand washing basins; straws as pen holders and decoration flowers. The model can be applied in offices or at home to raise awareness of garbage classification and recycling, according to Vo Thanh Han.

Two students Cao Thi Xinh and Mau Thi Anh Khai at Ba Cum Bac Junior High School in Khanh Son District skillfully created beautiful flower baskets and vases called "reincarnated flowers" from used straws, plastic bottles, etc. "This contest is very rewarding for students. The school preliminary round drew much attention and interest. With creative ideas and thoughts realized into practical products, the students have contributed to calling for joint effort in protecting the environment," says Nguyen Thi Ngoc Han, Vice-Principal of Ly Tu Trong High School in Nha Trang City.

Facilitating students’ scientific research

The contest has been organized twice in Khanh Hoa Province. Many schools have spent much effort, bringing to the contest creative scientific and technical products and projects; vivid video clips and photos for environment protection. Especially, prize-winning products show creative thinking, practical method of research and feasibility. The students had full aware of their research and confidently presented their projects before the jury, according to Hoang Thi Ly, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training.

This contest has provided a great chance for students to meet, learn, exchange knowledge, and promote their confidence and responsibility for environmental protection. Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training appreciated the effort of all individuals and groups to overcome difficulties caused by the recent Typhoon Damrey to make and finish the products. Schools need to continue facilitating students to learn and practice scientific research and promote creativeness as well as boost environmental protection propaganda, says Hoang Thi Ly.

The contest was held by Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training in association with Khanh Hoa Department of Natural Resources & Environmental on November 27-29 with the participation of 117 products made by 196 students at 8 junior high schools and 26 senior high schools. 8 first prizes were awarded to the plastic waste treatment based on biodegradation (by students at Vo Van Ky Junior High School, Nha Trang City); treatment of Fe2 contaminated water (Ly Tu Trong High School, Nha Trang); waste recycling  to make an incubator (Phan Boi Chau High School, Cam Ranh); Off-shore garbage collection;  trash collection machine on the harbor (Ngo Gia Tu High School); Reincarnated flowers (Ba Cum Bac Junior High School, Khanh Son); Treatment of CO2 and CO emissions in factories using charcoal, rice husk, and agricultural by-products as fuel in Ninh Hoa (Nguyen Chi Thanh High School, Ninh Hoa); and Gas generator system produced from food waste (Tran Binh Trong High School, Cam Lam).
