16 out of 18 suspension bridges damaged by Typhoon Damrey in Khanh Vinh District, Khanh Hoa Province are in need of repair to facilitate travel and transportation of agricultural produce. Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee has just approved VND800 million funding for the repair of the suspension bridges.
Suoi May suspension bridge which links dozens of Raglai ethnic minority households in Suoi May Village, Khanh Dong Commune to other places was caused to slacken and become unstable and dangerous for traveling in Typhoon Damrey 2017. Nguyen Thanh Tuan, Chairman of Khanh Dong Commune People’s Committee says, badly-damaged Suoi May Bridge abutments are in need of urgent repair to prevent the bridge from being broken and washed away in heavy rain. Besides, Oc River suspension bridge also slackens after the typhoon.
Bau Sang suspension bridge, Bau Sang Village, Lien sang Commune has broken cables and turns on one side, causing traffic disruption, especially in heavy rain in the communes of Lien Sang, Khanh Thuong and Giang Ly, approximately 200ha. Ngo Dinh Thai, Vice-Chairman of Lien Sang Commune People’s Committee says 2 suspension bridges in Lien Sang Commune were damaged in the typhoon. The local authority has suggested repairing the bridges to facilitate travel and transportation of agricultural produces. Cho River suspension bridge in Khanh Binh Commune is also closed because of its damage. 2 barriers have been put at each end of the bridge to prevent travelers.
Nguyen Tan Nghia, a resident in Khanh Binh Commune says, “Since the bridge was broken, we have to take a roundabout route through Khanh Hiep Commune to reach Khanh Vinh Town. Local residents hope that Khanh Vinh District People’s Committee will invest in repairing the only bridge in Khanh Binh Commune to facilitate travelers and assure traffic safety in rainy seasons.”

Khanh Vinh District People’s committee has suggested the repair funding and Khanh Hoa People’s Committee has approved VND800 million budget to repair suspension bridges. The work will begin right after the funding is provided, according to Pham Duc Dung, Vice-Head of Khanh Vinh District Economics & Infrastructures Office.
