HQ 571 Ship has just taken us to the Namyit Island, Sinh Ton Commune, Truong Sa Island. I had been here in 2007 and received warm welcome by island soldiers. Today, together with warm welcome as usual, the Namyit Island is much greener with lush trees and vegetables.

The Namyit Island is among large islands in Truong Sa Island District. Thanks to constant effort of generations of soldiers and soldiers, the Namyit Island is covered with green carpets of trees. The island with edges surrounded by Scaevola taccada trees looks like a green pearl at the sea. Concreted roads are between beautifully trimmed plants and flower gardens.

It is sunny and windy all year round with barren vegetation in many places on the Spratly Islands. However, the Namyit Island alone enjoys lush vegetation like on the mainland with thriving coconut trees, Casuarina equisetifolia, Barringtonia asiatica, Scaevola taccada, Calophyllum inophyllum, Morinda citrifolia and many trees become ancient. Especially, an 8-branch Barringtonia asiatica has been recognized as a heritage tree.
Remarkably, there are many coconut trees on the Namyit Island. There are more than 500 coconut trees, including 370 fruitful ones. Every year, the Namyit Island provides some 100 breeder coconut trees for other islands. Therefore, the Namyit Island is also known as a “coconut tree island”, says Senior Lieutenant Colonel, Commissar Tran Van Hung.

Together with huge trees, the Namyit Island also has many kinds of vegetables and fruit trees such as Brassica integrifolia, Basella alba, Luffa cylindrica, Carica papaya, etc. 13,337 kg of vegetables, 3,105 kg of meat and 2,855kg of fish were harvested on the entire island in 2017. The island can produce a sufficient supply of vegetables and part of other food stuff for officials and soldiers, says Nguyen Van Tho, Commander of the Namyit Island.

The Namyit Island was liberated on April 27, 1975 and then was awarded the title Hero of the Peoples Armed Forces on December 22, 2004. Besides, the island was granted certificates of merit by the Prime Minister for 4 times in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2010; flags for leading the emulation campaign by Vietnamese Naval Headquarter for 5 times and title “Unit of Determined Victory”, etc for several times. The Namyit Island is lush thanks to the joint effort of all officials and soldiers and they are proud of the green island. They set targets of planting trees every year. In 2017, about 2,000 trees were cultivated and the survival rate was 100%.

Joining a mission to the Namyit Island, Associate Professor, PhD.Le Tuan, a lecturer of Hanoi University of Science & Technology, a member of The Youth Club for the Homeland's Seas and Islands was so impressed by the lush green on the island. He excitedly took photos of Barringtonia asiatica buds and then shot videos to capture a green carpet of beach morning glory on the sand. “I am so surprised at the lushness on the Namyit Island. Trees together with gardens of vegetables and trellises of Luffa cylindrica well looked after by officials and soldiers make the island like a peaceful village on the mainland. I will remember the lush green on the island forever, he says.

From the lighthouse, we can see a wonderful panoramic view of the green island with hidden red tiles of the constructions and the curved roof of Nam Huyen Pagoda far away. I thought to myself we are making effort to protect and build the island more beautiful and the lush green on the island is a clear demonstration.
