6-lane Nha Trang – Cam Lam Highway project feasibility study

Ho Chi Minh Road Project Management Board (under the Ministry of Transport) has made a feasibility report of the Nha Trang – Cam Lam Highway project...

Ho Chi Minh Road Project Management Board (under the Ministry of Transport) has made a feasibility report of the Nha Trang – Cam Lam Highway project. Accordingly, the project in the period 2018 – 2020 includes a 6-lane 29km highway at a designed speed of 120km/ hour.

Adjustment made to old plan

According to Ho Chi Minh Road Project Management Board, the Nha Trang – Cam Lam Highway project approved in 2010 by the Ministry of Transport was discontinued due to funding allocation difficulty. The National Assembly has just given approval to the redevelopment of the project under the strategy on building some highways on the north-south road to the east, period 2017 - 2020.

However, after 5 years, the current site conditions have experienced some changes. Therefore, a recent survey has been conducted for making adjustment to the construction plan in order to minimize house relocation and site clearance with less impact on farmland and better access to existing road system.

According to the proposed plan, the 29km highway begins in Dien Tho Commune, Dien Khanh District, runs northwest-southeast, crosses Hon Ngang Mount where a 480m tunnel will be built; and ends in Cam Hiep Bac Commune, Cam Lam District. The new plan is more convenient, shortening the length by 790m compared with the old plan.

Project required to contribute to local socio-economic growth

The highway is designed to have 6 lanes with 4 lanes scheduled to be constructed in the first phase. The new plan is quite feasible as it does not supplant most of the farmland in Dien Tho Commune, acording to Dinh Van Thieu, Chairman of Dien Khanh District People’s Committee. A survey is required to build a collector road and a tunnel without affecting local travel and production. The work needs the consensus of locals, says Nguyen Cong Dinh, Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Transport.

Le Duc Vinh appreciated the project feasibility report and required for the specification of the highway connected to the national road and provincial roads to facilitate travel, business and production activities, contributing to the local socio-economic growth.

On November 22, 2017, the National Assembly approved a north – south highway project. Accordingly, the project in the period 2017 – 2020 includes 654km road from Cao Bo (Nam Dinh) to Bai Vot (Ha Tinh); from Cam Lo (Quang Tri) to La Son (Thua Thien - Hue); from Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa) to Dau Giay (Dong Nai) and My Thuan 2 Bridge (Tien Giang and Vinh Long). The 2017 – 2020 constructon is divided into component projects with a total capital of VND118,000 billion, including VND63,000 billion mobilized outside the budget; and over 3,700ha land, including 1,000ha paddy farmland. The National Assembly has assigned the Government to get preparation for the project development from 2017 and basically finish the work by 2021.
