Localities in Khanh Hoa will turn off lights in some areas for 1 hour on March 24 in response to the Earth Hour 2018. Hotels in Nha Trang City will also participate in the global switch-off event with various vibrant activities.

Le Thu Hai, Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Commerce & Industry says the Earth Hour 2018 campaign delivers the message “Go More Green”. Khanh Hoa Department of Commerce & Trade has required towns and districts to launch Earth Hour propaganda and encourage individuals, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour on March 24.

Accordingly, some lights in public places and amusement parks and advertising lights in districts and towns in Khanh Hoa will be switched off during the Earth Hour from 8:30p.m. to 9:30p.m. As in previous years, Nha Trang City is the focus of the Earth Hour celebration. All lights at the beach park, on Xom Bong Bridge, in Hon Chong tourist site and on some main streets will be turned off during the Earth Hour. Besides, families have also been encouraged to get involved in the lights-off event.

This year, most of big hotels in Nha Trang City have pledged to switch off lights for 1 hour in response to the event. Besides, many activities will be held to raise tourists’ awareness of energy-saving and environmental protection. Specifically, a documentary film “Blue Planet” created and produced by the BBC will be shown at Novotel Nha Trang from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m on March 24. The film features oceanic life which comprises 71% of our planet.

Apart from light switch-off, InterContinental Nha Trang will also serve a seafood buffet and organize a musical show in a candlelit ambiance. In recent years, Earth Hour activities held by hotels have contributed greatly to raising community awareness, drawing more participation of local and foreign visitors. “A couple of days before the Earth Hour, many people have asked about the Earth Hour program to participate in. This shows more public awareness of environmental protection through the Earth Hour activities,” says Dao Duy Huy, in charge of communications of Novotel Nha Trang Hotel.

According to Khanh Hoa Power Company, Earth Hour activities in 2017 saved approximately 3,000 KWh, helping to raise energy saving awareness. The staff have been asked to respond to the event and mobilize their families and friends to get involved in the event by voluntarily turning off their non-essential lights to save energy during the Earth Hour, says Nguyen Kim Hoang, Deputy CEO of Khanh Hoa Power Company.

Earth Hour is a worldwide campaign organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The event aims to raise public awareness of climate change mitigation and energy saving. It was started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. Since then, it has grown to engage more than 7,000 cities and towns across 172 countries and territories. Earth Hour was initiated in Vietnam in 2009 with the participation of 6 provinces and cities. This year’s event is expected to be joined by all 63 provinces and cities nationwide.
