Working hard and saving for several years, Lee Yeong-Chul, Former President of Yeong Kwang Girl’s High School, South Korea, has taken many charity trips for nearly 10 years to award scholarships to students in need in Thailand, the Philippines, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, etc.
Benevolence of a Korean family
On March 19, Lee Yeong-Chul paid a visit and awarded scholarships worth USD100 each to disadvantaged teachers and students at Nguyen Thien Thuat High School, Nha Trang City (6 scholarships) and Nha Trang National Ethnic Minority Pre-University School (5 Scholarships). Earlier, he had also offered scholarships to students at Nha Trang University and helped many students in recognition of challenge, sharing and diligence.
Lee Yeong-Chul recalled, “Some 50 years ago when I was a schoolboy, I also suffered from great financial hardship. Therefore, I understand the difficulties of students from poor families and I would like to join burden-sharing effort. I have two sons. The eldest one is living in Italy and the other is working in Korea. I feel so lucky to have a happy family that shares the same passion for charity work. The Lee Yeong-Chul scholarship fund is the joint effort of all of us. We have worked hard and saved to help those in need. Our financial support is not much, I know, but I hope it will help inspire students to greater effort to overcome difficulties in life to get better study results. I’m so happy to share and award scholarships.”
MA. Hoang Trong Ngo, Vice-Principal of Nha Trang National Ethnic Minority Pre-University School says, “We have an honor to receive the gifts as scholarships from Lee Yeong-Chul. These gifts bring more happiness and strength to the needy to overcome their difficult circumstances in life. I feel grateful for the good deeds and hope the school will continue receive such support for those in need.”
“Thank you so much for the scholarship. I will use the money efficiently and care more about the community and help younger generations,” says Nguyen Ngoc Minh Thu, a student at Nguyen Thien Thuat High School. Dinh Thi Thu Nguyet, a student at Nha Trang National Ethnic Minority Pre-University School says, “I’m glad to receive the scholarship. I promise to study harder to deserve Lee Yeong-Chul’s generosity.”
Lee Yeong-Chul says his family will try to save more to develop the scholarship funds to help more students in Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa.
Giving is receiving happiness
Giving to others the best of what we have is receiving greater joy and happiness. It is reflected in Lee Yeong-Chul’s bright eyes and warm smile when giving scholarships to teachers, students and other people in need.
Teacher Vu Thi Luy Anh, Nha Trang National Ethnic Minority Pre-University School says, “I’m suffering from kidney failure and have to travel far to Ho Chi Minh City for regular examination. My school managing board and colleges have helped me a lot and now I also get support from another person from a foreign country. I feel moved and grateful for his kind heart. I feel his great happiness when giving the gifts to us. I hope he will also receive love and kindness from others. I wish him good health to continue with his charity work for the sake of others and the community and I also hope he will live for himself as well.”
Living for the community’s sake means a lot to the society and each of us as well. Through the charity work, he hopes scholarship beneficiaries will develop the spirit of challenge, sharing and diligence. Giving is receiving. Sharing the best of what we have is receiving great joy and happiness. Sharing always brings miracles. “I hope more and more people join charity work, helping to make life happier for you, for me and for everyone,” affirms Lee Yeong-Chul.
