Cam Lam District Center for Population & Family Planning is boosting adolescent health care education, helping to raise teenagers’ awareness of adolescent health care, striving to cut unintended pregnancy rate down by 30%.

Adolescent education

Le Thi Bich Lieu, Vice-Director of Cam Lam District Center for Population & Family Planning says in 2017, talks on reproductive heath care, population and family planning were jointly held at high schools and community education centers. Besides, the students were provided knowledge about teen pregnancy prevention; adolescent health care; gender equality, the law on marriage and family; the issues of gender inequality at birth, child marriage, consanguineous marriage and child sexual abuse risk. The center also focused on activities to improve the population quality.

Ho Van Thien, class 9/4, Nguyen Trai Junior High School, Cam An Bac Commune, says, “After 3 times attending adolescent health care education sessions, I know how to take good care of my reproductive health and have a healthy life style.” Her classmate Tran Ngoc Bang Nha adds, “I used to feel embarrassed or shy when learning about the adolescent reproductive heath. However, the knowledge provided by population officials is very helpful for me to get well-prepared for my future marriage life.”

Vo Thi Thu Loan, Vice-Principal of Nguyen Trai Junior High School says the school has focused on adolescent health care education and thus integration of the adolescent health care education into such subjects as civics, biologics as well as extracurricular activities and school meetings every week. Besides, the school has also handed posters, leaflets and booklets about adolescent health care out to the students. In addition, the school has also cooperated with medical instructions to provide periodical check-ups to make sure students have good health, build a sound life style, and prevent school violence and unintended teen pregnancy.

Educational visits to homes

Apart from propaganda and education at school, Cam Lam District Center for Population & Family Planning has also paid educational visits to homes and medical care facilities to propagandize the law on population and family planning and jointly integrated population tasks into group meetings.

The projects on minimizing gender inequality at birth and promoting public participation in birth control device supply in cooperation with Khanh Hoa Women’s Union have held nearly 25 talks in the district with the participation of 400 people, handed out 17,650 leaflets, hung some 100 banners on main streets to propagandize the policies on the population; models and projects to improve population quality; 159 consulting sessions on reproductive health care, the law on population & family planning for 2,151 households, contributing to fulfilling the targets of reducing the birth rate to 11.24‰; reducing couples with more than 2 children to 8.51%, child marriages down to 18 cases.

Adolescents need access to high quality, comprehensive reproductive health care education which requires the joint effort of the Party Committee at all levels, the government, departments and organizations and especially students’ families to help them have healthy behaviors at a critical juncture in the lifecourse.
