With the joint effort in healthcare service promotion, the health care system in Truong Sa Island District has much improved, contributing to better medical care for islanders, soldiers and fishermen.

Saving many fishermen at sea

In mid April, Le Quoc Phong, Quang Ngai Province, met an accident while fishing offshore and got a broken leg. He received emergency treatment at Truong Sa Town Medical Center. After a few days when his health became better, he was brought to the mainland to have bone fracture repair surgery. “I feel satisfied with the rapid emergency service on the island,” he says.

In April, the Thuyen Chai Island Medical Institution treated the fisherman Trinh Van Hong from Phu Yen Province suffering from vomiting and cramps due to food poisoning from fish. In late 2017, the Sinh Ton Island infirmary saved a fisherman named Nguyen Van Can, Song Cau District, Phu Yen Province, on a fishing boat PY 96789TS. While fishing, his toes on the left foot were fractured and had to be cut off. After the surgery when his health was in a good mood, he was then transferred to the mainland for follow-up treatment. The 3 patients were among hundreds of cases successfully cured and saved in Truong Sa Island District in the recent time.

Upgrading infrastructures

With the joint effort in healthcare service promotion, the infrastructures of medical centers and clinics in Truong Sa Island District have much improved. Truong Sa Town Medical Center has just been rebuilt and put into operation for nearly 1 year with sufficient equipment such as X-ray machines, 4D color ultrasound scanners and a remote diagnosis system. Besides, in 2016, Song Tu Tay Island infirmary was also upgraded.
Particularly, all medical centers, clinics and infirmaries in Truong Sa District have applied online medical diagnosis system, which allows transmitting images and test results to the mainland to find the best treatment, especially for complicated diseases.

Dr. Bui Tran Khoa, Truong Sa Dong Island Infirmary, Truong Sa Island District says, in 2017, the clinic provided emergency treatment for nearly 30 patients, including 3 suffering from acute appendicitis, 1 from decompression sickness and 1 from urinary retention and examined 340 others. According to Dr. Trinh Van Tuan, Thuyen Chai Island, the island clinic serves some 15-20 patents, mostly fishermen, every month. Common diseases include skin diseases, stomachache, backache and food poisoning from fish.

Apart from the medical system on the islands, in 2013, the most modern hospital ship coded 561 of the Vietnam People’s Navy was put into operation. 5-8 medical trips are taken every year, providing medical treatment and examination for fishermen. Remote diagnostics is applied for complicated cases to improve medical treatment, says Dr. Thai Dam Luong.

Khanh Hoa is developing a project to develop healthcare services in coastal and island areas, period 2017- 2020, focusing on more supplies of medication and medical staff in order to further promote the health care for soldiers and residents on the islands.
