Since its foundation, the Coastal branch of Vietnam-Russia Tropical Centre has constantly boosted its scientific research and technological transfer, meeting the demand for the national security and socioeconomic growth.

Contributing to protecting materials and equipment

Over the past 30 years, the coastal branch has conducted tropical durability tests known as natural weathering tests, marine tests and accelerated tests for physical, mechanical properties of materials, including airplane components, military equipment, etc. The study on corrosion inhibitors and coating has been put under trial in natural marine environment. Accordingly, more than 5,000 samples of materials of all kinds have been tested. The study has shown the effectiveness of the paint coating; corrosion rate of metals and their alloys in seawater. Among tested materials are new models of steel specialized for the shipbuilding industry. This is the direction of testing programs directly related to actual application of ship-building industry of Russian and Vietnamese naval forces.

Especially, the remarkable achievement of the branch is the successful creation of a corrosion protector on boat Gepard 3.9 and the research and selection of the 2 substances named cationic and anionic which prove effective in water treatment for the cooling system of submarines. Vietnam People's Navy has effectively used the substances in water treatment for the cooling system of submarines at Naval Brigade 189.

In addition, the coastal branch has fulfilled its research of weather durability and the effects of tropical weather on technical conditions of the Air Defense Air Force weapons; checked and maintained the operation of some coastal radar stations affected by weather conditions in the Southern Central Region.

Effort to preserve marine biology

Over the past years, this centre has focused on studying marine and freshwater biodiversity and the biology system in some typical areas in Vietnam; and thus collected basic scientific data on marine biodiversity, structures and function of water ecosystems for the conservation, restoration and development of water resources in Vietnam.

Apart from the basic studies, the coastal branch has also conducted, applied and oriented researches on marine fish reproductive biology, environmental toxicology in estuaries and on Nha Trang Bay; mangrove ecosystems and human impacts on ecosystems. The research on the condition and regeneration of coral reefs on Nha Trang Bay has helped protect the gene pool of endangered and rare species, contributing to the regeneration and development of coral reefs damaged due to human impact.

The coastal branch has an especially important location which includes the sea and the land with some areas adjacent to 2 climatic environments. Research subjects on tropical durability are all related to the sea such as natural terrestrial and marine experiments on atmospheric corrosion, material aging and prevention measures; coral reefs off-shore and in coastal areas from the north to the south of Vietnam, coral reef variability, coral reef sustainability under the impact of the environment; coral reef rehabilitation and conservation. Vietnam – Russia Tropical Center together with its coastal branch has set research direction and development strategies and ensured the best favorable working conditions, says PhD Andrey Kuznhetsov, CEO of Vietnam – Russia Tropical Center.

The coastal branch of Vietnam-Russia Tropical Centre, under the Ministry of National Defense, is specialized in conducting research in such fields as tropical durability, the impact of tropical climate on weapons, military equipment; the influence of chemical remnants of wars and domestic waste on the ecological environment, marine biodiversity, rivers and lakes in Vietnam; and serving the national security and socio-economic development.
