Open vaccination campaigns have been maintained by the health sectors of Khanh Hoa Province and Truong Sa Island District, making sure that all children in vaccine-age groups on the Spratly Islands are immunized as regulated.

2 medical staff of the Khanh Hoa Medical Center has just joined a recent mission trip to the Spratly Islands, bringing vaccines together with brochures and handouts about diseases. They took home visits to give vaccination to kids on the Southwest Cay. A child named Dang Khanh Huyen was given a booster dose against Japanese encephalitis.  Her mother Nguyen Thi Thanh Thoan says, “Although living on the island, my daughter has been fully vaccinated.” 10 other children on the island also have been given medical check-up and vaccinated.

Nearly 30 nursery-school aged children on the Spratly Island and Sin Cowe Island have been given primary and booster doses. Besides, instructions on how to kill mosquitoes to prevent dengue, use preventive medicines (cloramin B) to disinfect affected areas, reduce fever with lukewarm water, etc have been provided.

Local residents have become aware of the vaccination for children and adults. Annually, medical staff from the mainland take periodical trips to the island to provide updated information about epidemic prevention and control and give vaccination in the open vaccination campaign. All children there have been vaccinated against diseases, says Lieutenant-Colonel Vu The Long, Commander of Sin Cowe Island.

Over the past 10 years, Khanh Hoa Center of Preventive Medicine has developed preventive health care programs in Truong Sa Island District. Apart from the open vaccination, the center staff have propagandized vaccination benefits and healthy life-style to protect locals from diseases. Brochures and handouts against hand-foot-and-mouth diseases, hepatitis B, rabies and dengue as well as child vaccination schedules have been distributed.

Khanh Hoa Center of Preventive Medicine is making a plan on the prevention and control of flies and harmful insects found on the islands to protect local residents’ heath. Besides, the center has provided vaccines against rabies, medicines to prevent flu A and treat globefish and shellfish poisoning, according to Huynh Trong Tan, Vice-Head of the Department of Infectious Disease Control, Khanh Hoa Center of Preventive Medicine, Secretary of Khanh Hoa Open Vaccination Project.

Together with activities towards the national sea and islands, the preventive health care in Truong Sa District has helped protect the health of soldiers and residents on the islands, contributing to promoting the offshore fishing as well as protecting the national sovereignty over the national sea and islands.
