The construction on Cho River embankment in Dien Xuan Commune, Dien Khanh District, Khanh Hoa Province has been 70% complete so far. The work is expected to finish in late July to handle the emergency situation of riverbank landslides to assure safety and protect the lives and properties of travelers and local residents.

The Cho river basin has been severely eroded since the floods in 2016, especially after the Typhoon Damrey. The most severely are in Xuan Dong Village with cultivated land, trees and homes damaged and subsequently demolished into the river.

k The Cho River embankment work is 70% complete.

The families of Le Cong Que, Le Cong Cuc, etc had to move to other places for safety in flood reasons. According to leaders of Dien Xuan Commune, the landslide site is about 150m in length, affecting 80 families, including 4 directly affected; In addition, concrete roads in the residential area leading to the provincial road 8 are also affected.

The local authorities of the district and commune have put up danger signs, barriers and evacuated people from high-risk areas as a temporary solution until more permanent safety measures can be taken. Meanwhile, the funding for construction of the embankment exceeds the budget of the district. Therefore, the district has requested Khanh Hoa Province to allocate funding to prevent further severe riverbank landslides by building a Cho River embankment.

Nguyen Tan Cuong, Chief of Dien Khanh District Economics Office says, as soon as the allocated VND8.5 billion funding from Khanh Hoa People’s Committee, the district has accelerated the construction of the Cho River embankment. The work is 70% complete and expected to finish in late July in an attempt to assure safety for local residents in rainy seasons.

“The riverbank landslide has demolished my house. We have to move to my son’s house. The River bank failure has caused 15m of my garden to slump since 2016. Therefore, I feel so happy with the construction of the embankment,” says Le Cong Que.

Reportedly, the embankment section against river bank slumping has a length of 156m and height of 9m with structures of rubble and crushed stones in concrete frames. Many surveys have been conducted to assure the construction quality.
