The voluntary blood donation campaign in Khanh Hoa has expanded for more than 10 years in response to the call of the World Health Organization, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and International Society of Blood Transfusion. Khanh Hoa Province has ranked tenth in the blood donation campaign.
Life-saving donation
Ho Le Tuan, who has donated blood for over 70 times, residing in Huong Long Quarter, Ba Ngoi Ward, Cam Ranh City, has been awarded a certificate of merit by the Prime Minister. In 2005, when taking care of his family member at Cam Ranh Hospital, he found that many patients were in need of blood transmission. Since then, he decided to start blood donation. “At first, my wife disagreed with my decision because she was worried about my health. However, I persuaded her of the life-saving deed and then my wife and my 5 children together with my relatives and friends are eager to join the effort. Since then, my family has donated more than 124 units of blood.
Tran Thi Nhu Hoa has donated blood for 13 times, including 3 times for emergency use. Whenever there is someone in need of blood for tramsmission, she is willing to be present at once at the hospital to donate blood to save life. To donate blood is to save life as well as share burden with poor patients, she thinks.
The blood donation campaign has become more and more widespread not only among families but also at schools and agencies. The Air Force Academy is among outstanding units in the voluntary blood donation campaign. Colonel Ngo Vinh Phuc, Principal of the Air Force Academy says the blood donation campaign has become an annual activity with more than 1,000 staff and students joining blood donation, giving nearly 1,000 units of blood every year.
Blood donated increase
Suffering from Thalassemia from the age of 4, Nguyen Duc Phong, Cam Ranh City has to get regular blood transmission. “For 16 years now, I am able to live and go to school thanks to the blood donated. I hope there will be more and more blood donors so that more people will be saved,” he says.
In Khanh Hoa, blood donated increased from 4,000-5,000 units annually 5 years ago to 19,000 units in 2017. The figure is expected to increase to 20,000 units. The blood donated has been brought to hospitals and medical institutions for medical emergency and treatment use.
Le Van Hoa, Chairman of Khanh Hoa Red Cross, Vice-Chief of Khanh Hoa Steering Board for Blood Donation says, the blood donation campaign has developed in most of communities, schools, agencies and businesses. Urgent Blood Donor Clubs in communities have been founded with over 12,000 members who regularly meet together to donate blood to maintain a regular blood supply.
The achievements are thanks to the joint effort of the local authorities, agencies and organizations. Besides, Khanh Hoa Steering Board for Blood Donation has held many meetings to review and draw experience from the donation mobilization tasks, build plans to attract more blood donors and ensure effective use of donated blood, according to Nguyen Dac Tai, Vice-Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee, Chief of Khanh Hoa Mobilization Board for Voluntary Blood Donation.
Reportedly, Khanh Hoa Steering Board for Blood Donation was awarded certificates of merit in 2017 and the period 10 years (2008 - 2017) by the Ministry of Health for achievements in blood donation tasks.
From June 14, 2017 to June 14, 2018, 102 blood donation drives were held with the participation of nearly 20,000 people, donating more than 18,600 units of blood. Blood donors accounted for 1.5% of the population, repeated donation 63% and the use of donated blood reached 99%.
