The oriental medicine in Khanh Hoa has gained satisfactory achievements over 10 years of implementation of the Instructions No. 24 by the Secretariat of the Central Committee Communist Party on traditional Vietnamese medicine preservation and development, contributing greatly to promoting the local health care.

4 provincial-level hospitals in Khanh Hoa have had traditional medicine service so far. They include Khanh Hoa Traditional Medicine & Rehabilitation Hospital; Khanh Hoa General Hospital, Ninh Hoa General Hospital and Cam Ranh General Hospital. Other specialized hospitals at provincial levels have no traditional medicine departments but they have also combined traditional and conventional medicines in treatment. Since 2008, more than 2.3 million patient arrivals have undergone traditional therapies.

Remarkably, Khanh Hoa Traditional Medicine & Rehabilitation Hospital was founded in 2012 based on a nursing and rehabilitation hospital. Dr. Nguyen Minh Hieu, Director of the hospital says since then, the patient beds have increased to 100 from 40. Many advanced technologies have been applied in treatment such as acupuncture, fiber laser, Holter monitoring, high pressure oxygen therapy, electroneurography, orthopaedic surgery, spinal cord rehabilitation, rehabilitation therapy after a stroke, etc.

According to the leader of the Traditional Medicine department, Khanh Hoa General Hospital, since the implementation of the Instructions No. 24, the traditional medicine management has standardized as regulated by the Ministry of Health. Besides, the infrastructures have improved, meeting 100% of medical treatment needs.

Khanh Hoa Oriental Medicine Association has developed with 6/9 Oriental Medicine Associations at district-level, 11 branches under the provincial Oriental Medicine Association; 106 grassroots branches and 223 clinics. Since 2008, Khanh Hoa Oriental Medicine Association at all levels have provided treatment for nearly 5.9 million patients, collected 400 effective traditional remedies from experienced practitioners and chosen 169 popular therapies to be published on the website of Khanh Hoa Oriental Medicine Association for reference.

Besides the medical treatment, the Oriental Medicine Associations and branches have also focused on charity activities, providing discount or free medical treatment worth over VND 5.5 billion for more than 332,000 poor patients. The number of patients provided traditional medicine treatment in Khanh Hoa increased from 48,437 in 2008 to 234,602 in 2017. The health insurance payment for traditional medicine treatment increased from 1.85% in 2008 to 4.85% in 2017.

“Traditional medicine workshops and conferences are great chances for practitioners to meet and share experience. I hope more and more traditional medicine workshops and conferences will be held in Khanh Hoa in the time to come,” says Dr. Le Ba Nguyen, Head of the traditional Medicine Department, Khanh Hoa General Hospital.

Difficulties in building sample medicinal herb gardens are the lack of land, herb breeders, cultivation techniques, etc. In the time to come, the Association strives to cooperate with other institutions to open training courses on oriental medicine, provide support for the establishment of a clinic of Cam Lam District Oriental Medicine Association, suggest suitable remuneration for the association officials in order to increase the effectiveness of association's activities and traditional medical examination and treatment, contributing to better heath care, according to Le Thi Bac Thai, Vice-Chairperson of Khanh Hoa Oriental Medicine Association.

Reviewing 10 years of implementation of the Instructions No. 24, Nguyen Tan Tuan, Permanent Deputy Secretary of Khanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Council comments that the oriental medicine has much developed in the locality. The development of traditional medicine and the Oriental Medicine Association at all levels will be among political tasks in the time to come. They include medical ethics and professionalism development; preservation of effective traditional remedies, etc.
