Trash collection boats have been used in the 2 recent years by Nha Trang Urban Environment Company to remove trash from rivers in an effort to keep Nha Trang Bay clean and beautiful.

One day at 7am, we joined the Environmental Team 3, Nha Trang Urban Environment Company to pick up litter in Cai River. Leaving Ha Ha Wharf, on a motorboat carrying seven 50 - 70kg garbage containers, 2 workers in protective clothing used their hands to pick up trash. One of then said picking up rubbish in the river was not very hard, but required patience and meticulosity. They had to remove all litter often clinging to the two banks or boats along the wharf. Leaving Ha Ra, the boat headed to Tran Phu Bridge and  Xom Bong Bridge before the sun came up high.

Vo Thi Bach Hoa, Vice-Chief of the Environment team 3 says 2 trash collection boats with a capacity of 45CV are used for litter removal in Cai and Quan Truong rivers every 2 days. The river trash removal service has been operational for 2 years now, contributing to protecting the environment on Nha Trang Bay.

Nha Trang Environment Company has 5 teams, including 3 in charge of trash collection on the ground and in waters. In the recent 2 years, the company has invested in 2 additional boats to remove litter from rivers. Besides, the company has cooperated with local wards and communes to raise public awareness of environmental protection, according to Tran Van Huong, Director of Nha Trang Environment Company.

According to Huynh Binh Thai, Head of Nha Trang Bay Management Board, the trash collection on Nha Trang Bay has run stably, especially since the river clean-up is done by the company. The company has also collected bags, food wrappers and leftovers from aquaculture farms on Nha Trang bay, targeting at 2-4.5tons/ day in order to collect all the waste from 170 aquaculturists, helping to keep the bay clean and beautiful.

However, some residents living along rivers and aquaculturists still keep the bad habit of littering into the waterway. The rate of solid waste collection is low (less than 60%) on islands, especially Bai Mieu. Besides, in the rain, woody debris from the upstream makes the waste treatment harder; Aquaculture planning on the bay towards moving aquaculture farms and boats to Tri Nguyen - Bai Mieu (fishing village) is putting more pressure on the environment on the bay, causing difficulties for the transportation of solid waste, etc.

To deal with the problems mentioned above, Nha Trang Bay Management Board has reported the cases of 43/63 households failing to meet aquaculture waste collection regulations to Nha Trang Interdisciplinary Team to apply penalties. Meanwhile, more joint effort will be made to boost propaganda and clean under Cau Bong Bridge, Vinh Phuoc Ward; Ho Ro lobster trapping place, Tri Nguyen Wharf, cliffs on Hon Mot, Bai Ngang, Con Se Tre Tourist Site, etc. Besides, a detailed plan on activities of floating restaurants is needed to be issued by Khanh Hoa People’s Committee in order to promote the effectiveness of environmental protection activities on Nha Trang Bay.
