In recent years, Binh Ba Island, Cam Binh Commune, Cam Ranh City, Khanh Hoa Province has received an increasing number of tourists. Leaders of Cam Ranh City as well as Cam Binh Commune are making effort to protect the environment and keep the island clean and free of trash.

The commune is launching propaganda to raise public awareness of environmental protection by reducing the use of plastic bags and substituting them with environmental friendly paper and rattan bags. Lobster farmers are required to collect lobster food bags to put into the right place for waste collection and not throw into the sea.

Cam Binh Commune has mobilized tourism businesses, restaurants and hotels to voluntarily contribute to funding cleanup activities on the island. Most of the tourism and service businesses voluntarily donate VND100,000-200,000/ month each. The sum will be used to pay clean-up workers who collect waste on the beach and floating trash, bring the waste to the dumping ground for burning, according to Nguyen Huu Thong, Vice-Chairman of Cam Binh Commune People’s Committee.

Reportedly, Cam Ranh City People’s Committee has invested into the waste treatment plant as the current landfill is overloaded. The VND4 billion plant construction was completed in end 2017 and put under the commune management. However, the commune is lacking fund to pay salaries (some VND24 million/month) to 4 operating workers. The commune has asked for the solution from Cam Ranh City People’s Committee on the problem.

A scheme on the plant operation, labor, waste collection in the water and on the beach; trash transport and classification, etc is required to put the waste treatment plant into use. The city has assigned the Office of Financing & Planning to survey and submit the plan on primary operational funding calculation to be forwarded to Khanh Hoa People’s Committee for approval.

Binh Ba Island welcomes an average of 1,000 tourists/ day at weekend and some 200 during weekdays. 15 tons of trash is produced everyday while the existing dumping ground is overloaded. Therefore, the city is trying to put the waste treatment plant into service soon this July to reduce trash surge on Binh Ba Island, says Nguyen Huu Dung, Chairman of Cam Ranh City People’s Committee.
