Many clean water supply works have just been put into operation in Dien Khanh District, helping communities which used to suffer from the use of contaminated water or the lack of clean water have access to clean water and adequate sanitation.
Increased access to clean water
The Center for Rural Clean Water & Environmental Sanitation has tested and put the Loc - Binh - Hoa Water Plant into operation after 17 months of construction, providing a safe source of clean water for the communes of Dien Loc, Dien Binh and Dien Hoa. Just 1 week after the acceptance testing, more than 500 families have applied for clean water use.
“I’m so happy about the clean water plant. 9 of us in my family mainly depend on water taken from wells in daily activities. However, during hot days, we do not get enough water, then we have to buy or get clean water from other families,” says Nguyen Let, Van Thanh Village, Dien Hoa Commune. Nguyen Let and many other families are also delighted that they will have access to clean water soon, just 7-10 days of their application. The installment cost is some VND1-1.2 million/ family.
Loc - Binh - Hoa Water Plant has a capacity of 1,500m3/ day and night, operating on the water treatment line of sedimentation, filtration and disinfection, meeting the national criteria. The water plant is located in Dien Binh Commune. Water from Suoi Dau River is treated and then provided for 5,000 households with some 15,000 people. The construction investment is worth VND27.6 billion.
This August, the communes of Dien Lam and Dien Xuan will also have access to clean water when Xuan – Lam Water Plant with a capacity of 1,200m3/day and night is put into operation. The plant has an investment capital of VND19 billion.
Clean water coverage
At present, there are two clean water supply units, namely Khanh Hoa Water Supply & Sewerage Company and the Center for Rural Clean Water & Environmental Sanitation in Dien Khanh District. The Center for Rural Clean Water & Environmental Sanitation has 5 clean water supply plants, namely Dien Phuoc - Dien Lac - Dien Tho; Dien Son - Dien Dien; Dien Dong; Dien Loc - Dien Binh - Dien Hoa; and Dien Xuan - Dien Lam. Khanh Hoa Water Supply & Sewerage Company serves the water use needs of Dien Khanh Town, Dien An Commune, Suoi Hiep Commune and some other regions.
The clean water supply water work in Dien Tan Commune, listed in the investment plan for the period 2018 – 2019, benefits from the non-refundable aid from of the Australian government. Suoi Tien Commune has access to a gravity water-supply system. Dien Khanh District has basically had full access to a clean source of water. Only some homes located on hills, slopes or in places far away from the main pipes have not had access to the clean water supply.
The public awareness of clean water use in rural areas has improved. The number of households connected to the clean water supply has much increased. The local living standard has improved considerably with the use of many household appliances such as washing machines, solar water heaters, firetube heaters, etc. Therefore, the need for clean water in rural areas, especially in places affected by unclean water sources, becomes more urgent, says Le Van Hung, Director of the Center for Rural Clean Water & Environmental Sanitation.
