The campaign to boost reproductive health care & family planning services in disadvantaged communities with high birth rates in Ninh Hoa Town has contributed to improving mother and child health. Especially, the campaign has provided family planning knowledge for ethnic minority women in remote areas.

Ninh Thuong, Ninh Son and Ninh Tan are Ninh Hoa Town’s disadvantaged communes with high birth and poverty rates, traffic difficulties and insufficient medical care services. Therefore, the local reproductive health service and mother and child health care has been also affected.

Mother-of-seven and grandmother-of-two Cao Thi Dien, a Raglai woman in Suoi Sau Village, Ninh Tan Commune is only 37 years old. Her family is very poor and her children have to work to help earn a living. One of her children got married at 16. However, she is reluctant to use contraceptives although population and family planning officials have taken home visit to persuade her to use sterilization to prevent further unexpected pregnancies.

Annually, the Commune Steering Board for Branch for Population & Family Planning prioritizes the supply of health care service such as treatment, counseling, contraceptive injection, contraceptive implantation and other reproductive healthcare for women aged 15-49 in disadvantaged areas; makes lists of couples in reproductive age and couples with children of the same sex for effective approach in birth control propaganda and services; and in cooperation with mother and child care teams expands the campaign in villages to raise public awareness.

Thanks to the enhancement in the propaganda and services, some disadvantaged communities have achieved some remarkable results in population and family planning tasks. Especially, in Ninh Tan, local residents have become more aware of the birth control policies. Families with many children have decreased considerably. In 2017, couples with more than 2 children decreased to 6.25% and the birth rate down to 10.18‰, lower than the average rate of the entire town. Only one case of child marriage was reported.

In recent years, the town has focused on promoting population quality, especially reproductive health care services in disadvantaged, mountainous and populated areas; boosted the supply and distribution of contraceptives and reproductive health care services in urban and rural areas to assist the efforts of the Government in public reproductive health care; and continued propaganda on models and projects on improving population quality, contributing to fulfill the target to raise the population quality in the town in the coming time, according to Nguyen Ngo Bich Khue, Director of Ninh Hoa Town Center for population and Family Planning Center.
