Under the student financial aid program launched by the Border Defense Force Headquarter, since 2014, Khanh Hoa Border Defense Force has sponsored 52 disadvantaged students, helping them overcome difficulties and continue their schooling.
Tran Thi Kim Toa born in 2004, class 9A at Van Thanh Primary & Junior High School becomes an orphan after her parents’ death in a traffic accident 5 years ago. Despite old age, her grandfather, Tran Ngoc Anh, over 60, in Dam Mon Village, Van Thanh Commune, Van Ninh District, had to go fishing to earn a living for his 3 little grandchildren. The family is so poor and in need of financial support. Therefore, since 2016, Dam Mon Border Defense Station has decided to sponsor Tran Thi Kim Toa with VND500,000 grant/ month until she graduates from high school. Tran Ngoc Anh says, “Poor my grandkids! They become orphans from their young age. I don’t want them to have more suffering for lack of education, so I try our best to help them to go to school but I’m not sure I can afford it. The assistance of the Border Defense force is so valuable, helping her with academic pursuits.”
Another recipient is Nguyen Thi Anh Tuyet, a 7th-grader at Mai Xuan Thuong Junior High School. Her parents died in a road crash, leaving her behind when she was only 18 months old. Since then, she has been in the care of her aunt named Nguyen Thi Nga, Vinh Hai Ward, Nha Trang City. Unluckily, Nguyen Thi Nga has recently suffered from a stroke and now she is unable to work any more. She also has to spend a lot of money on medicines. The family becomes poor. Fortunately, Nguyen Thi Anh Tuyet benefits from the sponsor of Dam Mon Border Defense. “My niece is given VND500,000 grant/month from the grade 5 until high school education. We are so grateful. The grant helps enable her to continue schooling,” says Nguyen Thi Nga.
According to Senior Lieutenant Bui Van Hoang, Youth Assistant, Border Defense Force Headquarter, the two students mentioned above are among 52 cases sponsored by Khanh Hoa Border Defense Force in the student financial aid program. Most of the recipients are orphans in dire need of financial assistance. The funding is from the donations of cadres and soldiers and the production boost fund of the unit.
In order to promote the effectiveness of the program, the Border Defense Force Youth Union has provided consultancy for the Commander to develop the plans for the program and coordinate closely with localities and schools to give support to those in need. In addition to the monthly allowance, officers and soldiers regularly take home visit to learn more about students’ difficulties in study and life, so that additional support may be provided. Moreover, gifts are given to them on national holidays.
“The student financial aid program has been expanded by Border Defense Force and advocated by local residents in border areas, showing the responsibility and burden-sharing effort of border guards; contributing to strengthening and reinforcing the solidarity and attachment between people and military forces," reports Colonel Ho Thanh Tung, Commander of the Provincial Border Defense Command.
