Currently, there is little green space with few urban trees in Nha Trang City. Therefore, the city has plans to add trees in an attempt to keep Nha Trang City evergreen, clean and beautiful.
Nha Trang City has a low ratio of trees in public places. Small pavements, small parks, few parks, etc are among reasons blamed for lack of green space in Nha Trang City. Especially, Typhoon Damrey in 2017 even damaged and destroyed thousands of trees, says Le Tien Vinh, Director of Nha Trang City Pubic Service Management Board.
Nha Trang City is drafting a greenery and landscape project in the city. Under the consultancy unit’s proposal, greenery priority will be given to main streets and central parks. The funding is estimated to be VND108 billion, diverging from 2019 to 2025.
According to a representative of Khanh Hoa Department of Construction, the project needs to look at the construction of a park in western Nha Trang City, thus give proposal to adjust the 1/2000 master plan; and update new projects. The representative of Khanh Hoa Department of Construction also agrees to propose to build a large park. The project should mention the density of trees in urban areas. In addition, land funds previously planned for the North-South high-speed railway could be considered for green space in areas unfavorable to stationary traffic development.
Social criticism is needed to choose suitable public trees for the city to prevent similar cases happening to Alstonia scholaris and Nerium oleander which have to be replaced afterwards, suggests Dao Thanh Tung, Chief of Nha Trang Economic Office.
Tran An Khanh, Nha Trang City Party Committee Secretary says the project needs assessment based on specific species, preservation and renovation of existing parks; and proposal to create new park funds. Street trees need to be classified and chosen to suit each road.
In addition, It is necessary to mobilize people to clear the sidewalks together with planting trees in compliance with Resolution 17; simultaneously encourage residents to plant trees in front of their houses and offices to create green walls and facades. Criteria for tree selection at new urban zones are required to suit the local soil and climate. Tree development policy framework is needed together with a proposal for building a mangrove forest park in western Nha Trang City.
The project has not specified the exact number of trees in streets, in parks; not proposed an approach to tree management technology. Therefore, consultants should update the number of trees for comprehensive management. Factors of soil, environment, landscape, etc must to be considered to choose suitable tree species. Consultants and investors are required to take the ideas and suggestions into consideration. The project will continue to be reviewed by the Union of Science and Technology Associations before it is submitted to the provincial People's Committee, according to Le Huu Tho, Chairman of Nha Trang City People's Committee Nha Trang.
