Preparedness planning for food and other necessities in flood shelters

The Office of Khanh Hoa Steering Board for Flood Control, Natural Disaster Relief & Rescue in association with Nha Trang City Office of Economics checked the evacuation operation in Phuoc Dong Commune and Vinh Truong Ward, Nha Trang City on November 21.
 
Landslide-risk places in Phuoc Dong include Xom Nui, Xom Mui (Hon Ro 1, Thanh Phat Village and Thanh Dat Village), Phuoc Tan Village, Xanh Mountain slopes and foot-hills. It is estimated that some 3,800 residents, including 314 families with 1.300 people in Xom Nui ad Xom Mui; are needed to be evacuated to temporary shelters in the cultural house of Phu Cuong - Phu Tho Village, Phuoc Thinh Primary School, Le Thanh Liem Junior High School and Hon Ro Border Guard Station.

Phuoc Thinh Primary School, Phuoc Dong, is able to accommodate 400 people.
 
125 families with 480 people in Phuoc Tan Village are also in need of evacuation. 200 people will move to the hall of Phuoc Tan Village and the Commune People’s Committee Office; and others will rest in schools and cultural & sports centers. 500 families with 2,000 people in 6 villages located on the mountain slopes and foot-hills include Phuoc Loc, Phuoc Trung, Phuoc Son, Phuoc Thuong, Phuoc Ha and Phuoc Dien will be evacuated to the commune sports hall, Commune People’s Committee Office, Commune Police Office,  Phuoc Loc Cultural House, Phuoc Dong Nursery School, Phuoc Dong Primary School and Lam Son Junior High School. 
 
Nguyen Trong Thanh, Principal of Phuoc Thinh Primary School says, there are 20 classrooms available for temporary shelters. Tran Thi Nguyet, Principal of Le Thanh Liem Junior High School says evacuees can rest inside the school with 12 rooms and 1 hall which can accommodate 500 people. According to the leader of Phuoc Dong Commune People’s Committee, the Hon Ro Border Guard Station is often used as a temporary shelter for 200 – 300 people in cases of natural disasters.
 
More than 1,000 people in To 2, 3, 4 Truong Son likely to be affected by flooding are in need of evacuation. Temporary shelters are Tran Hung Dao Junior High School and the Ward Peoples’ Committee Office.  
 
Nguyen Tien Luat, Vice-Chairman of Phuoc Dong Commune People’s Committee, 50 officials will be allocated to join the emergency response. The commune has made a request to the Office of Khanh Hoa Steering Board for Flood Control, Natural Disaster Relief & Rescue for additional 200 officials for natural disaster response emergencies as many places in Phuoc Dong are prone to isolation in flooding.
 
Localities are working to make sure preparedness planning for food, water, sanitation and other necessities in shelter locations.
