After nearly 5 months of construction, 120 storm-proof houses funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have been handed over to local residents in Khanh Hoa Province. The support is to provide emergency shelter assistance for poor and marginally poor ethnic minorities whose houses collapsed in Typhoon Damrey.

Cao Van Duong’s family used to live in an old worn-down corrugated iron- roofed house in Suoi Thom Village, Khanh Dong Commune, Khanh Vinh District. His home was completely destroyed in Typhoon Damrey in late 2017. His family cannot afford to build a new house, so they have to build a temporary shelter camp near his parents’ house. Khanh Hoa Red Cross has taken a survey and given VND50 million aid from the Central Emergency Response Fund to build a storm-proof house for his family.

The construction of the house, 40m2, has been completed after 5 months and handed over to his family. “We are so grateful to the support of Khanh Hoa Red Cross, other organizations and individuals. We feel so happy as we are safe in the new house which can survive  storm surge. The new home is such a great relief and encouragement to all of us,” says Cao Van Duong.

Thai Thi Tuyet’s family in Suoi Thom Village, Khanh Dong Commune, Khanh Vinh District, has also just moved to a new house, 500m from Cao Van Duong’s. “The house is our dream. We used to live in a thatched cottage which was destroyed in the typhoon. We couldn't afford to build a new house, so we had to set up a tent and live there. We have been offered VND50 million aid to build a storm-roof house,” says Thai Thi Tuyet.

120 poor families in Khanh Hoa share the same happiness of having storm-proof houses, including 18 in Ninh Hoa, 32 in Khanh Vinh, 30 in Van Ninh, 20 in Cam Lam and 20 in Dien Khanh. The construction aid for each house, 40m2, is VND50 million. The house construction funding is sponsored by the Korean Government through the UNDP cooperated with Khanh Hoa Red Cross to provide assistance for families made homeless in Typhoon Damrey. The houses not only provide material support but also show the sharing of the international community with the disadvantaged.

Khanh Hoa Red Cross has cooperated with the People’s Committees of districts to make eligibility assessment and build houses funded by the UNDP for the poor. The house construction has met the design, quality and progress required by the UNDP and Khanh Hoa Red Cross. 100 of the constructions have been completed and handed over to the beneficiaries, reports Khanh Hoa Red Cross leader.
