Since early November, Nha Trang Bay Management Board has established 2 safe swimming zones along the coast on Pham Van Dong Street to improve water safety. Five more swimming zones are expected to be designated along the coast on Tran Phu Street.
In the recent month, Doan Van Tam, Vinh Hai Ward has felt safer swimming within the water safety zones marked with life buoys on Cu Chi Street. “Getting tired while swimming, I can lean against mooring buoys for a while and then swim back to the shore,” he says. Most of residents and tourists are seen swimming within the swimming areas zoned by life buoys on Cu Chi Street and Dang Tat Street. Similarly, the 2 safe swimming zones are piloted by Nha Trang Bay Management Board.
RIP currents seen on the sea at Hon Chong and neighboring zones are blamed for several drowning cases. “Rescue workers are always present to warn people of swimming danger and instruct them to swim within safe swimming zones. Local residents and tourists have followed our instructions. No drowning cases have been reported in the recent month since the establishment of the swimming zone,” says Nguyen Quoc Viet, Head of a rescue team at the Hon Chong Zone.
From January to December, lifeguards of Nha Trang Bay Management Board have rescued nearly 60 people from drowning and injuries. Local residents and tourists are advised to follow the instructions and warning of the rescue teams by not swimming outside safety zones marked with safety flags and life buoys and the presence of life-guards.
According to Nguyen Van Hung, Head of the rescuer team, 38 members are in charge of rescue mission along the beach, more than 8km, on Tran Phu and Pham Van Dong streets. 100% of the rescuers are present in main work shifts from 5am to 9am and from 3:00 to 6:30.
However, the drowning risks can be at any time of the day, especially on the rough sea. Therefore, Nha Trang Bay Management Board has zoned swimming areas to improve water safety for both local residents and tourists. Each zone is some 200 - 300m2 and can be recognized with flags, lifebuoys and signs. Rescuers are also present there in case of emergency. Tired swimmers can cling to the lifebuoys to rest before swimming back to the shore or stay there, waiting for the rescue. The activity has helped to reduce drowning risks.
Nha Trang Bay Management Board plans to designate 5 more safe swimming zones along the coast on Tran Phu Street, specifically at Thanh Nien Park, Tue Tinh Street - Khanh Hoa Public Security; Nguyen Thi Minh Khai - 2-4 Square; Nguyen Chanh Street; Le Loi Street.
