Library periods applied since the beginning of the 2018 – 2019 school-year by Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training have held the attention of educational managers and librarians, contributing to motivating primary school children to access library resources and thus helping develop their reading skills.
The world opens up to you when opening a book
With an inspirational voice of the librarian Nguyen Thi Ha (To Hap town Primary School, Khanh Son District), the story "A strange egg" about the Rabbit picking up an egg and the journey to find the mother of the egg became so inspiring to the 2nd graders. The librarian sparked their interest with different voices to bring story characters to life, helping the kids enter the world of imagination and then feel free to raise their ideas and thought about the story. The 20-library period became so interesting and entertaining.
Books are a helpful tool to instill important values and morals in children. “After a training workshop at the department, librarians are asked to take library periods at schools to inspire the love for reading in kids as well as make them feel relaxed after studying. Many pupils also excitedly reminded me about the following reading classes. The librarian and pupils become closer to each other. After 8 years working as a librarian, this is the first time children have called me teacher,” says Nguyen Thi Ha.
Each reading period at the completion was about a different topic about fairies, friends and moral lessons. Through relatable familiar characters and life adventures, young children could learn vital life lessons while nurturing their imaginations. Following the library period was the chance for children to play acting, write and draw about the characters.
Besides, the friendly and welcoming environment with attractive decoration at the library helps encourage reading for pleasure, thus naturally delivering particular kind of message as a moral to kids.
Various library activities
According to the organizing board, the competing librarians had well-prepared stories and visual aids and pupils showed great interest in narrative characterization naturally. Reading periods help spice up kids’ literature, develop the ability of expression and motivate kids to discover their own interests and enthusiasm for books.
The library period competition was a chance for librarians to show their professional excellence, exchange experience and promote career inspiration, contributing to promoting the essential role of librarians. Managing staff at all levels are required to organize various library activities to attract young readers, build plans on professional development for librarians; improve infrastructures and resources for libraries; decorate libraries to have a welcoming look to attract pupils, contributing to improving educational quality, according Hoang Thi Ly, Vice-Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training.
