An exchange program with kids with autism from Khanh Hoa Rehabilitation Education Center for Disabled Children has just been held at Tan Lap 2 Primary School, Nha Trang City. The event helped promote the love and understanding for kids suffering from autism.
Delivering messages of love and sympathy
The program started with a dance show “an afternoon going to a mountain village”. Among the performers was Phu, a kid with autism. The show received a big applaud for the great effort of the kid together with the support from his friends and educators. A music chair game and a quiz about autism raised pupils’ awareness of the disease. Vo Nha Uyen, 3/5 class, Tan Lap 2 Primary School says, “the event helps me understand more about autism which includes impairments in social interaction and communication skills. Some kids with autism are studying in my school. I’ll get closer talking to them and assisting them in learning.”
“All kids need love and understanding. Therefore, the school has cooperated with the center in organizing the exchange program. 7 kids with disability, including autism are studying at the school. They receive special love and care. In spite of learning difficulty, their basic life skills have improved. I hope the event will help pupils and teachers understand more about children with autism and thus give them more love, attention and care,” says Chau Dinh Mai Phuong, Principal of Tan Lap 2 Primary School.
Earlier intervene needed
Children with autism suffer from impairments in social interaction and developmental language and communication skills combined with rigid, repetitive behaviors, therefore they have much trouble in daily life. However, the situation will improve if they get understanding, help and care from their families and communities, facilitating them to develop their social skills to integrate into the community.
In Khanh Hoa Province, currently, there are 5 establishments for children with disabilities, including autism. Khanh Hoa Rehabilitation Education Center for Disabled Children has provided education and early intervene for children with autism since 2013-2014 school year. Kids under care have increased from 3 or 4 initially to 24. Besides, community–based early intervene has also provided to 6-year-olds. Early intervene has helped effectively improve functional behaviors and communication skills.
“Children with autism have great troubles with social integration. Through the program, we hope to improve their communication skills as well as provide an opportunity to promote the awareness of autism and problems facing kids with autism and promote love and understanding for kids with autism,” says Teacher Phan Thi Ngoc Sinh, Vice-Director of Khanh Hoa Rehabilitation Education Center for Disabled Children.
