The implementation of the Red Alert emergency procedure helps save lives of seriously ill patients at Khanh Hoa General Hospital.
Seriously ill patients saved
In mid-March, Doan Ngoc Th., 19, in Ninh Hai Ward, Ninh Hoa Town was hospitalized from Ninh Hoa General Hospital to Khanh Hoa General Hospital, suffering from a 2cm-deep stab wound, resulting in severe bleeding and unstable vital signs. An Alert Red was issued for an emergency surgery. The patient survived the severe circumstance and he was discharged 10 days later.
Most recently, on April 2, Le Van P, 27, Ninh Hoa Town was hospitalized in a state of coma and severe bleeding with a deep wound in the breast. The Alert Red was issued for an emergency surgery and within 10 minutes, an emergency open surgery was conducted, getting blood clots out of the heart and lung.
Dr. Le Viet Huan, Deputy Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery & Blood Vessels says the cases mentioned above are prone to death due to severe blood loss. Under the Alert Red procedure, the patients were transferred from Ninh Hoa General Hospital to Khanh Hoa General Hospital in time for emergency surgery. Besides, the prompt first aid, emergency service and information exchange cooperation between the 2 hospitals have increased chances to save life and reduce severity.
Alert Red procedure boost
In 2016, the Alert Red procedure was added to Hospital Quality Standard applied for all medical facilities nationwide. This is a base for Khanh Hoa General Hospital to put the Alert Red procedures into operation in 2017.
Dr. Phan Huu Chinh - Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa General Hospital says in a regular treatment process, a lot of time is needed for medical examination, clinical tests, consultation, and operating room preparation to get ready for the surgery. This process sometimes takes "golden time" to save patients’ life. The Red Alert process focuses on an emergency surgery to save time needed to deal with an acute threat to life. Since the Red Alert process was conducted, the hospital has saved dozens of severe injuries, mostly due to traffic accidents, labor accidents and fighting.
The Red Alert has been developed by Khanh Hoa General Hospital based on defining specific responsibilities and tasks of specialists and surgical staff. The chief surgeon is to activate the process. When the Red Alert is activated, the patient will be immediately transferred to an operating room where all necessary equipment and reserve blood are available for a surgery. Therefore, everything is ready within 5 -15 minutes for an emergency surgery to save life.
In the time to come, the hospital will improve the notification system for faster connection and communication. Rehearsals will be held many times for physicians of internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics and staff of operating rooms, subclinical, hematology, testing departments, etc to improve the coordination in emergency, according to Dr. Phan Huu Chinh.
