The World Environment Day 2019 is themed “Air pollution” by the United Nations. According to a report by the United Nations, every year, around 7 million premature deaths, including nearly 4 million in the Asian Pacific region are attributable to air pollution.
Air pollution costs the global economy more than USD5,000 billion every year. Ground-level ozone is expected to reduce staple crop yields by 26% by 2030. Air pollution has become a global challenge. The theme 2019 is to call all countries and communities to take action to minimise air hazards during the production and business practice globally.
Vo Tan Thai, Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Natural Resources & Environment says monitoring stations in Khanh Hoa show air quality index are still acceptable. The air quality has changed, but still within the acceptable limit. No areas have been reported to be air polluted, except during some certain periods due to temporary activities such as traffic, industrial and handicraft practice, seafood processing, etc.
At present, there are 17 air quality monitoring stations, including 2 automatic ones, in Khanh Hoa. The Department of Natural Resources & Environment has directed the Natural Resources & Environment Monitoring Center to monitor the air monthly according to the Decision No. 631 dated 17 March 2015 by Khanh Hoa People’s Committee on approving the environmental monitoring network till 2020 to prevent air pollution.
The air quality monitoring is to measure and monitor air quality and evaluate air emissions to protect public health and the environment from air and noise pollution in Khanh Hoa; make environmental report yearly; and give warnings of any risks of environmental pollution or degradation.
However, there are few air quality monitoring stations, just partly meeting the demand in Khanh Hoa, so the Department of Natural Resources & Environment has provided consultancy to Khanh Hoa People’s Committee to adjust the local monitoring network to adapt to the present socio-economic development.
