School pupils have delivered messages of joining hands to conserve and protect environment in simple ways with their small environmental projects.
A group of pupils from Hermann Gmeiner Nha Trang School have started their project with an environmental protection propaganda session for all staff, students and their parents; community activities; and an environmental-themed drawing contest for primary and junior high school students. All the proceeds from the paintings were donated to the No-limit project: building outdoor amusement parks and playgrounds at primary and high schools.
Waste materials and things collected from small projects at school were washed, dried and then sorted for recycling. Old plastic bottles and boxes were turned into flower pots. Old tires, mental scraps, beer cans and water pipes became outdoor toys such as slides, chain bridges, hopping animals, etc.
The “Talking Trees” group from Le Quy Don Gifted School, Nha Trang City has opened an outdoor fair with their “green fairy” project where over 200 students could meet, have fun and share experience about green lifestyles and simple ways of life. Visitors can get engaged in recycling, buy old books, clothes; and get straws, toothbrush, meal boxes and bags made from old clothing.
Nguyen Hai Dang, Head of the groups says the project is to raise awareness and change behaviors about waste, especially plastic waste and other pollutants that are hard to biodegrade. Over VND2.3 million turnover from the fair was donated to the 2-week “SEALNet Project Vietnam 2019: Full Bottle, Fewer Bottles”, focusing on environmental issues, especially plastic pollution, targeted at raising the awareness of disadvantaged children residing on the outskirts of Hanoi, Vietnam.
The group “We love Earth” from Ngo Gia Tu High School, Cam Ranh City has developed a project on check-in rest rooms. All students were motivated to join the clean-up, paint pictures, decorate, plant flowers, etc at their school rest rooms to make them beautiful and become a cool place even for taking commemorative photos. The good action has been posted on the school forum to inspire positive environmental behaviors.
A group from Nguyen Trai High School, Ninh Hoa Town has made a plan to collect batteries, staring at their school and then expanding to other high schools across Ninh Hoa Town. Members of the group of Ly Tu Trong High School, Nha Trang City have implemented activities to “say no to canned food and plastic use” and develop eco-friendly behaviors among students, their parents and teachers.
The 5 projects mentioned above were chosen to advance to the Green Environmental Final 2019 held by Nha Trang University in cooperation with Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training. The participating teams have been short-listed from hundreds of participants after 2 rounds to advance to the final with the implementation of small projects for community sake.
The projects have been funded by the organizing board and provided professional support from educational and social research organizations. Each project is an initiative highly appreciated for its practicality and feasibility, according to Dang Ngoc Le Thy, Vice-Chairwoman of High School & Regular Education Division, Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training.
The first prize went to Le Quy Don Gifted School and Ngo Gia Tu High School. The 2 other schools won the third prize. The contest is expected to take place annually to raise environmental awareness among students and the community.
