The 2019 summer swimming classes jointly held by Nha Trang City Youth Union and the Center for Culture, Information & Sports have equipped children with essential water safety skills.

Every morning from 7am to 9am, Nha Trang City Center for Culture, Information & Sports (12 Thi Sach, Nha Trang City) is crowded with children learning swimming. 11-year-old Nguyen Tan Thinh is taken to the swimming class by his parents 3 times a week. He can swim for a short distance after 1 month.

His father, Nguyen Duc, says many drownings have occurred in Khanh Hoa, so he wants his son to take the swimming class to improve his health and as well as practice an essential life-saving skill in summer.

Opening on June 10, the swimming classes are a practical playground for 120 children aged 9-13 in Nha Trang City. Nguyen Chi Anh, the Secretary of Nha Trang City Youth Union says the swimming and anti-drowning courses are annual activities held by Nha Trang City Youth Union. This is the 7th year such swimming classes have been held with the attendance of 120-150 children/ course.

Registration can be made at Nha Trang City Youth Union (18A Hoang Hoa Tham, Nha Trang City). Children of social welfare beneficiaries are exempt from fees. The course is intended to provide children and teenagers with knowledge and skills to improve health as well as prevent water-related accidents and drowning.

Most learners cannot swim or swim just a little. The learners are instructed to follow such steps as getting used to being in water, taking breathing exercise in water and pre-swim warm-up movements; and then practising swimming, says Nguyen Trieu Duy, Chief of the Professional Competence Group, Nha Trang City Center for Culture, Information & Sports.

Most of the learners can swim now. The swimming course is expected to end on August 3, providing children with swimming skills to stay safe, prevent drowning, tackle swimming accidents and save drowning swimmers.
