Khanh Hoa Union of Science & Technology Associations has just held a workshop to propagandize some technical initiatives from Khanh Hoa Scientific & Technical Creation Contest among local departments, agencies and Farmers’ Associations.
The products were in a variety of industries but those in mechanics and agriculture attracted the most attention for their high creativity, practicality and efficiency in production and animal husbandry. Vo Van Duoc, Cam Hai Dong Commune, Cam Lam District, presented his initiative on raising ducks on sand hills (letting them listen to music), helping increase output. He has invested in raising a large herd of ducks on sand hills after careful consideration on cages, food, care and consumption markets. The waterfowl have proved to well adapt to the new living environment. Especially, ducks raised on sand-hills have sold well.

Therefore, his family has decided to increase the herd to 6,000, selling 50-100 ducks, earning an income of VND5-7 million a year. Telling about his farm music for raising ducks, he said once he played music on his mobile phone, he noticed that the ducks reacted to music and seemed to eat more and grow faster, helping shorten the raising period, so every time he feeds ducks, he turns music on. The raising period has decreased from 3.5-4 months to 2.5-3 months and the average weight is 2.5kg/ duck. He gets a profit of VND35,000/ duck or nearly VND1 billion a year.
Another remarkable product is a hand ploughing machine by Nguyen Thi, Cam Hiep Bac, Cam Lam District. His family used to depend on oxen for ploughing and soil preparation for wheat, sugarcane and mango crops. However, ploughs pulled by oxen take a long time, labor and cost. An idea came to his mind about a hand ploughing machine. He assembled materials and parts available such as a diesel engine, ploughshares, chains, a tractor wheel, etc. to produce a hand ploughing machine used for weeding and ploughing. The cost of assembly is about VND10 million. It is able to plough twice or more as fast as oxen. After the ploughing work, what farmers need to do is cleaning the machine instead of raising oxen for a long time. He also used his machine to help other farmers in the neighborhood.
Regarding his creative product on raising Physignathus cocincinus, using ripe vegetables and fruits, Dinh Van Hiep, Van Phu Commune, Van Ninh District says Physignathus cocincinus is a kind of wild reptile feeding on cricket eggs, earthworms, baby caterpillars, fish, shrimps, house lizards, etc, thus affecting the ecological environment and investment cost is quite high. Therefore, he shifted from semi-natural farming to improved farming with cages, cooked vegetables and fruits with the target to improve the cleanliness of the farming and thus reduce diseases and raise efficiency.
He mixed cooked vegetables such as gourds, papayas, tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage turnips, squashes with cooked pork lungs to make food for Physignathus cocincinus. The advantages include faster growth rate, disease reduction, food available, low cost, easy clean-up, no environmental pollution and so on. According to Dinh Van Hiep, raising and feeding 1,000 Physignathus cocincinus with cooked food give a profit of VND37.5 million, an increase of VND20 million/ harvest.
Apart from the 3 models, the workshop also has 3 more products and initiatives, namely improved Kubota tractor- DC60 by Nguyen Dang, Van Gia Town, Van Ninh District; a rice collecting machine made from a threshing machine by Phan Quang Mai, Suoi Cat Commune, Cam Lam District; mixture of sludge and water hyacinth as feed for Perionyx excavatus by Le Ngoc Thach, Khanh Hoa Agricultural Promotion. The products have won prizes at Khanh Hoa Scientific & Technical Creation. Representatives have suggested the union should continue propagandizing and transferring technological applications more widely among farmers in Khanh Hoa.
