Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has approved a program on conserving endangered turtle species of Vietnam until 2025, vision to 2030. The program aims to protect and sustainably develop the populations of endangered turtle species and their habitats, contributing to biodiversity protection in Vietnam.


Accordingly, 3 conservation areas for sea and freshwater tortoises are also expected to be established, including an area for Mauremys annamensis in Binh Son District, Quang Ngai Province, another for Rafetus swinhoei in Son Tay Town, Hanoi, and the remainder for box turtles of the genus Cuora in Dong Hoa and Tay Hoa Districts of Phu Yen Province.

Meanwhile, projects on conserving endangered populations of sea and freshwater turtle species are expected to implemented in the provinces and cities of Hanoi, Quang Ninh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Quang Binh, Thua Thien Hue, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa; restoring and protecting habitats and egg-laying sites in Bai Tu Long and Co To –Thanh Lan (Quang Ninh); Hai Lang (Quang Tri), Nui Chua (Ninh Thuan), Cam Lam (Khanh Hoa), Hon Kho – Hai Giang (Binh Dinh), Hon Cau (Binh Thuan), Con Dao (Ba Ria- Vung Tau), Tho Chu (Kien Giang); Bach Long Vy (Hai Phong), Phu Quy (Binh Thuan), Phu Quoc (Kien Giang) and the Spratly Islands. Besides, 2 sea turtle rescue centers will be set up in the provinces of Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Khanh Hoa.
