Khanh Hoa Center for Reproductive Health Care has just disseminated maternal and child health handbooks considered as an effective tool in promoting and protecting the health of mothers and children.
According to Dr. Le Van Duc, Director of Khanh Hoa Center for Reproductive Health Care, 99.7% of pregnant women were reported to be under pregnancy care management with 97.3% provided prenatal care three times during the pregnancy; 99.56% birth deliveries at medical institutions; 92.89% receiving postnatal care of the mother and newborn in the first 6 months of 2019.
Besides postnatal care of mothers and newborns, reproductive health care, prevention of mother-to-child transmission of some infectious diseases and screening for cervical cancer, Khanh Hoa Center for Reproductive Health Care has disseminated maternal and child health handbooks as an effective record filled with essential knowledge for a mother to raise her baby and secure their health.
The mother and baby health record contains information on safe pregnancy, delivery and child health from birth up to 6 years old, ensuring continuity of maternal, neonatal and child health care; as well as monitoring the child growth and development with preventive intervention service information when needed. Therefore, the handbook provides an accurate report.
Especially, the maternal and child health handbooks help decrease paperwork for medical staff as the health handbooks can be the integration of pregnancy care cards and immunization cards which have coincided information. The handbook is compiled by the Department of Maternal & Child Health, Ministry of Health. It is composed of 5 parts covering basic information, pregnancy, delivery, newborn and childhood together with guidelines for mothers and families for pregnancy care, child care and first aids.
According to Le Van Duc, the use of the handbooks helps improve the knowledge of mothers on maternal and child health issues during pregnancy, delivery and post-delivery period for safe pregnancy, delivery and proper newborn care in order to reduce congenital deformities; develop mental and physical health; and timely detect anomalies for treatment.
Reportedly, the Ministry of Health will issue a decision on the use of maternal and child health handbooks as substitutes for medical check-up handbooks, pregnancy care books and immunization cards, etc. The maternal and child health handbooks will be digitized as a part of a health record. More propaganda is needed by the local authorities, agencies and organizations at all levels to promote the benefit of the use of the handbooks.
