Khanh Hoa Council of Science & Technology has just examined and approved a research on technical procedures for artificial reproduction of Strombus canarium Linnaeus, 1758 in Khanh Hoa, contributing to the development for commercial culture of Strombus canarium Linnaeus in the locality.
Improved reproduction process study
According to M.A Vu Trong Dai, Nha Trang University, commercial Strombus canarium Linnaeus is selling well and thus facing overexploitation and exhaustion risk. To develop the sea snail culture sustainably, there have been many studies on biological characteristics and techniques for producing artificial snails. However, the processes still have some limitations, including unstable technical platform, changing results, etc, so they have not been applied and expanded into production practices. Therefore, the source of snails still depends on the natural catch, thus it leads to the decrease of the population.
Learning from results of previous studies, the research technical procedures for artificial reproduction of Strombus canarium Linnaeus, 1758 in Khanh Hoa has been done since 2017. After 2 years, the research has successfully built technical procedures for artificial reproduction of Strombus canarium Linnaeus in the natural habitat in Khanh Hoa, with the criteria: maturation: 85%, insemination: 97%, hatching: over 93%; veliger survival: 70%, survival until juvenile stage level 1 (2 - 3mm): over 11%, survival until juvenile stage level 2 (8 - 12mm): 6 - 7%, etc.
After 3 periods of the artificially experimental reproduction, 640,000 juveniles level 1 (2 - 3mm) and 63,203 juveniles level 2 (8 - 12mm) have been reproduced with stable survival rate. The juveniles have been handed over to Cam Lam District Station of Industry, Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries Promotion to be transferred to aquacultirsts for commercial culture in earthen ponds or marine cages. Accordingly, the snails will be bred together with White Leg shrimp and Babylonia areolata in a pond measuring some 3,000m2. Marine cages of the snails are hung 1.2m above the sea level and the fish farms. The survival rate ranges from 45.6 to 61.5% after 3 periods of commercial culture.
Technological transfer
The technological artificial reproduction of the sea snails has been transferred to 3 mollusk farms in Vinh Luong Commune, Nha Trang City. 22,000 juveniles level 2 (8 - 13mm) have been reproduced in the farms. Le Quang Tu, one of the aquacultirsts receiving the technological transfer in Cat Loi Village, Vinh Luong Commune says “I have mastered the technical process. 8,000 juveniles, 8 to 12mm, have recently reproduced in my farm. The snails are growing well. The reproduction of the juveniles is a great progress. Information about the commercial culture techniques should be made more readily accessible to aquaculturists and marketableness is also my concern when reproduction process is applied and expanded."
Besides, from the research results, the researchers have issued a guidebook of artificial reproduction of the sea snails and provided technical procedure training via field workshops and demonstration models for 40 staff working in the field of reproduction of marine species for breeding purposes. “The most success of the study is proactive reproduction of parent juveniles with high survival and growth rate, a critical factor for improving stable population all year round.
The artificially experimental reproduction has shown initial promising results with good growth rate in earthen ponds and marine cages, completely suitable for the natural environment in Khanh Hoa. The study has provided further information about some marine species of high economic values, contributing to providing juveniles for the development of commercial culture of Strombus canarium Linnaeus in the locality.
