Khanh Hoa Department of Transportation is going to widen the waterway opening of the current Ko Roa Low-Water Bridge as a temporary traffic solution. A new construction is needed as a long-term solution to improve safety for travelers in rainy seasons.
Ko Roa Low-Water Bridge is located in Son Lam Commune, Provincial Road 9. Every rainy season, the bridge is submerged in floodwater and thus dangerous for travelers. Therefore, local crew maintains duty to warn travelers of danger and prevent them from crossing the bridge when submerged. Despite the obvious dangers and warnings given there is still a significant risk, especially at night for unwary travelers. Therefore, the commune has suggested building a more secure one.

Reportedly, the bridge upgrading was suggested in 2012 by the locality and approved in 2016 by the province but it has not yet developed for lack of funding. Nguyen Thanh Son, Chief of Traffic Infrastructure Management Office, Khanh Hoa Department of Transportation says Ko Roa low-water bridge, 198.5m long and 7m wide, is a concrete structure. The bridge is low and thus frequently flooded in water.
Khanh Hoa Department of transportation has decided to upgrade and widen the bridge in 2020. Accordingly, the construction has been added to the resolution of the provincial road maintenance fund in 2020. The work cost is estimated to be more than VND14.7 billion.
Accordingly, the bridge will be built 3m away from the old one, widening the waterway, reinforcing foundations with more stone blocks to protect from erosion. A temporary road, 121m, with a 3m surface and 4m road-bed with a culvert below will be created to maintain traffic and convey stream flow during the work.
The bridge upgrading is expected to begin and finish in 2020 to improve travelers’ safety. However, it is considered as just a temporary solution as a new high solid bridge is required. The project on the more solid bridge will be added to the public investment plan, medium term, period 2021 – 2025 of the province.
The bridge is expected to be 100m long and 9m wide with 900m road way on both sides at a total cost of over VND61 billion. The new bridge is expected to facilitate travel on the provincial road 9 and link to the traffic network, contributing to natural disaster control and socio-economic development, according to Nguyen Van Dan, Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Transportation.
