Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee has assigned the Southern Central Hydrometeorological Center to implement a project on building flood warning indicators in Khanh Hoa.
Vo Anh Kiet, Director of Southern Central Hydrometeorological Center says river flooding in Khanh Hoa occurs 3 or 4 times, causing massive property damage and life loss once or twice a year. Specifically, flood peaks in 2009, 2010 and 2016 were 0.16 – 0.7m above the warning level 3.
Khanh Hoa has invested in building flood warning indicators in flood-prone areas, helping to detect threatening events in advance and possible consequences, enabling the public to be warned en masse so that proactive actions can be taken to reduce and prevent the adverse effects of the natural disaster.
Flood warning indicators are often installed in places at high risk of flooding, populated areas and some important places such as historical vestiges, markets, schools, etc. 77 flood warning indicators have been installed in Khanh Hoa so far, including 4 in Van Ninh, 19 in Ninh Hoa Town, 19 in Dien Khanh, 4 in Cam Lam, 5 in Khanh Son, 12 in Cam Ranh and 9 in Nha Trang City.
Flood warning indicators are seen in critical places. On the indicators, there are floodwater height measurements and markings of historic flooding levels so that the public can be alerted and can undertake appropriate responses to minimize the impact of the event. Besides, the flood warning indicators can be used for home, traffic and irrigation constructions, agriculture, aquaculture, land use and planning management and so on.
Due to limited funding, the number of flood warning indicators in Khanh Hoa are less than demand. Therefore, more flood warning indicators are in need. Some existing flood warning indicators are also damaged due to long term use. Therefore, the hydrometeorological sector and local authorities should consider regularly checking, adding and removing flood warning indicators to suitable positions if necessary. In addition, local authorities need to raise public awareness of protection and use of flood warning indicators for effective natural disaster response, according to Vo Anh Kiet.
