The 2019 – 2020 Scientific & Technical Creation Contest has provided a great opportunity for students to develop creativity and explore how their learning applies to real world situations.

Turning ideas into reality

A student at Nguyen Chi Thanh High School has designed an automatic water heater, 1 of 4 projects winning the top prize. The idea came from the issue of air pollution due to agricultural and industrial practice. The project worked by catching fog and turning moisture into fresh water. It is able to produce 2.5l of water per hour, expected to meet the water supply of 1 family. Especially, the machine can heat water up to 80 - 100oC. The system can also cool a room to 28oC or reduce the moisture in places where agricultural products are stored.

Many other projects highly appreciated included extracting calcium from Tuna by Trinh Hoang Long, Nguyen Van Troi High School, Nha Trang City; vehicle extrication equipment by Dao Ngoc Truong Duy and Nguyen Duc Dai, iSchool Nha Trang; and power-generation road deceleration hump by Duong Bao Ngan, Le Quy Don Gifted School, Nha Trang City. Projects by students at Nguyen Van Troi High School and iSchool Nha Trang were recommended for further improvement to advance to the national round scheduled to take place in Da Nang in March.

Besides, many other practical projects included an automatic watering system in the green house operated by cell phones and an alarm clock by Le Hong Phong Junior High School, Ninh Hoa Town; swimming bikes for students in flooded areas by Ly Thuong Kiet Junior High School, etc.

Scientific research boosted

This is the 7th time Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training has held the contest and the 2nd time the department has received the participation and much support from Nha Trang University and Khanh Hoa University, marking a new step forward in scientific research. This year, applicants have increased compared with last year, according to Le Dinh Thuan, Vice-Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training.

141 projects in 14 sectors were beautifully and logically displayed. Many had demonstration designs and models with transparency and highlights. The projects were of high quality thanks to the cooperation with universities and leading experts together with valuable evaluation and comments from the organizing board, the jury and much investment from the grassroots levels. The competition has inspired students to develop creativity in scientific and technical research and apply what they have learnt at school in solving real-life problems, contributing to promoting the innovation in teaching and learning methods.

As soon as the contest finished, Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training has launched the 2020 – 2021 contest in order to turn the contest to become a regular activity, attracting the participation of many students. Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training has required schools to make preparation as soon as possible to assure enough time for participants to think, consider and make headway on problems they are interested in. Especially, it is essential for teachers experienced in scientific research to bring scientific research issues into regular meetings and discussion about problems arising in reality in class meetings, flag meetings and extracurricular activities to introduce students to the insights and enrich their research ideas. It would be also beneficial to facilitate teachers to attend scientific meetings and workshops and apply research results into reality.
