Khanh Hoa Hospital of Tropical Diseases has followed and monitored strict handling procedures of medical waste disposal during Covid-19 treatment and care to prevent the deadly disease transmission.

There are separate lanes for suspected cases in sub-clinical areas. X-ray and ultrasonography priority has been given to Covid-19 suspected cases right at patients’ bedside to reduce transmission. Food prepared by families or hospitals has been brought to patients by medical staff. “I was worried about Covid-19 potential transmission risk on my first day of hospitalization. However, I feel safe now. Medical staff regularly warn patients of quarantine rules. The quarantined area has caution signs and separate lanes. Hand sanitizers are available for use," says a 47-year-old patient, Lien Thanh, Vinh Phuong, Nha Trang City.

BS Vu Trinh Ngoc Minh, the Pharmacy & Infection Control Department of the hospital says infectious waste is disposed following the Circular No. 58/2015 of the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment on medical waste. The hospital has recently received the Ministry of Health’s document No. 495 on medical waste management.

All infectious waste is transported and disposed of in the correct manner and in compliance with legislation. The hospital has cooperated with Dien Khanh District Medical Center to properly transport and treat infectious waste, including preventive clothes, tools, etc during the Covid-19 treatment and care.

Khanh Hoa Department of Heath has directed medical facilities to strictly follow regulations under the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment’s document No. 495 dated on February 6 and document No. 1055 of Khanh Hoa Pope’s Committee on February 7 on medical waste management. The information has been also posted on the website of the Department of Health, says Dr. Bui Xuan Minh, Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Heath.

According to Khanh Hoa Hospital of Tropical Diseases, on February 1-12, Covid-19 related waste at the hospital mounted to 733kg while normal figure is about 280kg for half a month. The increased waste has had bad impacts on the hospital. Initially, the hospital sought waste collection assistance from Dien Khanh District Medical Center. The hospital has basically met the equipment requirement in waste collection so far. The management of increased infectious waste has put more pressure on medical staff. The infectious waste has increased three-fold, driving up the treatment cost.

The hospital has focused on following the Ministry of Health and Department of Health on waste disposal, collection and treatment procedures to ensure safety of medical staff, patients, their families and all waste management and environmental staff; and sufficient personal protective equipment for all health officials, and waste management and environmental staff in a bid to prevent cross-transmission in the hospital, according  to Dr. Nguyen Vu Quoc Binh, Vice-Director of Khanh Hoa Hospital of Tropical Diseases.
