Khanh Hoa Radio and Television (KTV) has just begun broadcasting a teaching program held by Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training to help 9th-graders and 12th-graders to review their lessons during the school closures due to Covid-19.

25-minute learning on TV

The first broadcast of teaching on television began at 9.am on March 16. It was a revision lesson on algebra, chapter 1 of grade 9 taught by Vo Khac Huy, Vice-Principle of Nguyen Hien Junior High School, Nha Trang City.

Ho Hoang Yen, a 9th-grader, reviews math knowledge through a TV program.

Sitting in front of a television with a notebook and a pen for making notes, Ho Hoang Yen, Class 9.1, Au Co Junior High School, Nha Trang City said, “I intend to take an entrance exam into Ly Tu Trong High School. My teachers told me about the TV teaching program and I think the program is very helpful in getting us to review the knowledge we have learned.”

Vo Tan Hoang, Vice-Principle of Au Co Junior High School said, “Teachers have made effort to prepare lessons on television for a short time. The lessons are on focused knowledge. I think teachers should give exercises for students at the end of every lesson and the time should increase to 30 minutes/lesson if possible.”

The 25-minute educational TV broadcasts help students to review knowledge on math, literature and English ahead of their coming important exams. The program is televised at 9am and rebroadcast at 4pm from Monday to Saturday. The television schedule is as follows: Monday: math (grade 9), Tuesday: English (grade 9), Wednesday: literature (grade 9), Thursday: math (grade 12), Friday: English (grade 12); Saturday: literature (grade 12). All the televised lessons are available on ktv.org.vn, KTV fanpage and youtube.

The TV teaching program meets the demand of students and their parents, helping students to recall important points, stay motivated and focused. However, it seems that 25 minutes is not enough for teachers to go over some parts of the lessons to make sure students understand lessons thoroughly. If possible, there should be 2 lessons every week, one on algebra and the other on geometry, according to Teacher Phung Thi Tuyen, Lam Son Junior High School, Nha Trang City.

Teacher Nguyen Huy Chuong, Nguyen Thai Binh Junior High School, Khanh Vinh District says, the TV program schedule is uploaded on the school website. Students have been notified of the teaching program by their form teachers. The teachers' explanation is clear and just at the right pace for all students to understand. I think teachers should give exercises to students at the end of each lesson.

Knowledge revision

Le Dinh Thuan, Vice-Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training says during the school closure period, schools have made great effort to assure learning can continue at home over the Covid-19 concerns. Besides online learning on VNPT’s Viettel Study and Elearning implemented by Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training, teaching on television can provide equitable access to learning for all students at home, especially those in remote areas.

Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training is to prepare lessons and KTV is in charge of broadcasting. The broadcasts are on literature, math and English known as the 3 main subjects in the high school entrance examination and the national high school graduation exam.

To prepare for the lessons on TV, Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training has held meetings with teachers of the 3 subjects. 60 teachers have had discussions on revision lessons based on knowledge in the first semester and earlier years. The lessons are required to be easy to understand, systematic and logical. Teachers take turns to give lessons on TV.

Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training has signed a contract with KTV on the broadcast of 27 lessons on the 3 subjects for grade 9 and grade 12. The broadcasts may be increased based on the evolution of the Covid-19 epidemic, according to Nguyen Sinh Cung, Head of High School Education and Regular Education Division, Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training.
