2020 is a tough year for the health care sector due to the Covid-19 outbreak which has killed millions of people worldwide. Covid-19 pandemic has been under control and some targets in health care have been fulfilled in Khanh Hoa Province thanks to great attempt of medical staff together with joint effort of local agencies and departments.

Many epidemics under control

The first locally transmitted case of Covid-19 in Vietnam was reported in Khanh Hoa in 2020. The medical staff has overcome initial challenges to have received and cured Covid-19 patients. No Covid-19 related death has been recorded in the province so far.

In addition, drastic prevention and control measures against many contagious diseases at risk of outbreak have been taken and the infection cases have decreased such as dengue down by 1.4%, hand foot and mouth disease down by 14.8%, measles down by 99%, mumps down by%, influenza A (A and A/H1N1) down by 30.4%, hepatitis down by 25.4%, etc. No cases of emerging and re-emerging A/H5N1, A/H7N9 and MerS Cov, meningococcal disease, plague, etc were reported in Khanh Hoa.

In addition, the health sector has continued effectively implementing programs on control and prevention against HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, leprosy, sexually transmitted diseases; mental health protection in the community; reproductive health care and children’s nutrition improvement, etc.

4 districts and towns in Khanh Hoa have been recognized to have eliminated leprosy at district level with the number of malaria cases down by nearly 70%; the cure rate for new cases of tuberculosis reaching nearly 98%; patients with diabetes and hypertension under management reaching 58- 68% (exceeding 8 -18% compared to the plan); underweight children down by nearly 0.5% and stunted children down by nearly 0.4%. Despite the impacts of the Covid-19 epidemic, the open vaccination program has ensured 95% of children under 1 vaccinated against 8 diseases.

Treatment task focused

Basic criteria in local health care in 2021 include the rate of public facility doctors/ 10,000 people reaching 8.5, public facility beds/10,000 people reaching more than 32, medical insurance coverage rate over 92%; and malnutrition rate in children under 5 below 9%. With the unprecedented worldwide occurrence of the coronavirus pandemic, to assure patient safety, all health facilities have operated disease prevention and control systems with regulations on the disease prevention and control are required for all people at health facilities.

Therefore, health care services in the province have been assured with convenient access, providing medical check-ups for 3.2 million of patient arrivals, 222,000 inpatients and 27,600 surgeries. Several advanced techniques have been implemented in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases; oral and dental diseases; orthopedic trauma, brain, cancer, etc. Especially, programs on technical transfer with higher- level facilities have been focused. Last year, Khanh Hoa General Hospital continued providing professional assistance for the general hospitals of Van Ninh, Dien Khanh, Cam Ranh and Cam Lam; and received specialized technical transfer from central hospitals.

Dr. Tran Dang Khoa, Chief of the Lower Limb Surgery Department, Ho Chi Minh City Trauma & Orthosis Hospital confirmed, “medical staff in Khanh Hoa has well received the technical transfer and leaders of the hospital have showed great concern on connecting to the program. Khanh Hoa General Hospital is one of provincial level hospital that have successfully and effectively received and implemented transferred techniques, according to many central hospitals.”

Despite the encouraging achievements, there have remained some problems in the heath care sector such as shortage of doctors, overloaded hospitals, more investment in equipment required and on-going unprecedented occurrence of contagious diseases at risk of outbreak. “In 2021, the provincial health sector continues efforts to promote the achievements gained, overcome difficulties; focus on improving medical services at all levels and promote health care; especially, well control infectious diseases and minimize infection and mortality caused by epidemics,” said Dr. Bui Xuan Minh, Director of the Department of Health.
