3 years protecting marine environment

A foreigner together with his friends exposed themselves to burning sunlight of early afternoons, picking up trash from the beach is often seen by residents in the residential quarter 1 Dong Hai, Ninh Hai Ward for 3 years now. The work has motivated many volunteers, residents and students, up to a hundred sometimes, to get involved.

Joshua Nathan Goldman, CEO of Australis Aquaculture Vietnam Company, Ltd., initiated the first Green Environment Day in 2018 and keeps it running once a month on Van Phong Beach. His company has collected 40 tons of trash, tidying 12km of the coast and attracting the participation of more than 2,000 volunteers.

Arriving in Vietnam in 2006, he has built plans to develop the company. The man has traveled to many coasts from Ca Mau to Khanh Hoa and finally chosen Van Phong Bay for his aquaculture. He was so fascinated by Van Phong Bay and Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province. The beaches were so clean with untouched natural beauty and extremely fresh air, like in his homeland. However, regretfully, as time goes by, Nha Trang Beach and Van Phong Bay turn to be littered with plastic trash, bags, etc. The sea-lover came up with an idea for the beach clean-up "Green Environment Day", wishing to keep the marine environment cleaner.

Outreaching

The beach stretching for 17km in Ninh Hai Ward is a getaway hotspot for relaxation and entertainment in coastal resorts and tourist sites. Marine environmental pollution has been of increasing concern. This place used to be very clean with fresh air, according to Nguyen Thi Tuyet who has been living in the residential Quarter 1 Dong Hai for more than 30 years.

Nguyen Nguyet Trang in Ninh Hai Ward has taken part in the Green Environmental Day for many times. Foreigners eagerly joining the beach clean-ups in the sunlight have had great impacts on residents. The work has raised public awareness of environmental protection and got locals involved.

Ninh Hai Ward Youth Union in cooperation with the Youth Unions of Tran Quy Cap High School (Ninh Hoa Town) and Ninh Hai Border Station; and Australis Company has recently organized the program "Volunteer Winter 2020 and Volunteer Spring 2021", awarding 14 scholarships to poor studious students. Earlier, Australis Company had invested VND1 billion in the construction of a children’s playground in Ninh Hai Ward.

Joshua Nathan Goldman and his family have traveled to several sea waters to study fisheries. Marine pollution caused by million of trash disposed of into oceans has become a global concern. The rubbish has not only polluted the environment but contaminated food chains for human consumption. Therefore, he hopes his company will contribute part of their efforts to protecting the living environment, raising public awareness  of pollution harms and changing behaviors among coastal communities for the better. The volunteers would like to deliver the marine environmental message among residents and tourists, contributing to making a difference.

Activities to protect the environment in general and the marine environment in particular have been focused and joined by the Party Committee at all levels, local authorities, Fatherland Front Committees, organizations and residents for a clean, green and beautiful environment. In addition, other organizations and individuals’ environemental efforts have been also appreciated. The Green Environment Day regularly launched by Australis Company has been a touch of motivation in the community, promoting solidarity among participating units and educating students and young generations to join hands to protect the marine environment, according to Khuu Thi Thanh Minh, Deputy Secretary of Ninh Hai Ward Standing Party Committee.

Joshua Nathan Goldman: The Green Environment Day is one of the ways to reciprocate the community, showing commitment to preserving the marine environment. Besides, inspiring young generations to join the beach clean-ups as well as granting scholarships to needy students have shown the concern of the company for future years. This year, Australis Vietnam will be the first fisheries company to receive Fair Trade certification and then the company plans to organize a Fair Trade program, requiring consumers to pay a bit higher for the company’s products and the amount of difference will go to the community development fund in Khanh Hoa Province.
