Raising awareness and behavior change

Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee has recently issued the project “Women in Khanh Hoa join action against plastic waste, period 2021 - 2025”. The project aims to raise awareness and responsibilities of officials, members, women and communities to prevent environmental pollution caused by plastic waste, promote sustainable economic development; gradually reduce the use of disposable plastics and replace them with reusable, environmentally friendly products; strengthen the participation of the community in disposable plastic waste collection and classification.

Specifically, the project targets by 2025,  100% households of women’s association officials’ families and 85% members’ families will have access to basic knowledge about environmental protection; improve awareness and change behavior to gradually reduce the use of  single-use plastics and non-biodegradable plastic bags and replace them with environmentally friendly products.

100% of the association staff’s families and 80% of members’ families will have trash cans to ensure environmental sanitation and proper waste classification. 100% of grassroots associations will develop at least 1 environmental protection model and campaign against plastic waste based on actual conditions; and organize a campaign to clean up rivers, beaches and residential areas in the province; 70% of production and business establishments owned by women will respond to the campaign against plastic waste. More than 20% of production and business establishments will sign commitments to replace plastic bags and plastic products with environmentally friendly products in manufacturing and business. Besides, 3 sample models "Say no to single-use plastic products and limit the use of plastic bags" will be developed on Tri Nguyen Island (Vinh Nguyen Ward, Nha Trang City), Binh Ba Island (Cam Binh Commune, Cam Ranh City), Diep Son Island Village (Van Thanh Commune, Van Ninh District) and so on.

The project will be implemented in the community, tourism businesses and agencies with priority given to localities severely affected by plastic waste. In the coming time, besides developing solutions defined in the project, the Women’s Union will integrate the implementation of the project in the campaign against plastic waste to reach the targets that have been set, according to Nguyen Hoang Van Ha, Deputy Chairman of Khanh Hoa Women’s Union.
