Nha Trang Port Border Station is making every effort to overcome difficulties to maintain 24-hour patrol to protect security as well as prevent coronavirus spread in maritime boundary areas.

Dual goals of epidemic containment and border protection

Nha Trang Port Border Station takes the task of epidemic prevention and control in maritime areas and in the communes and wards of Loc Tho, Vinh Nguyen, Vinh Truong and Phuoc Dong (Nha Trang City). The unit's command has promptly coordinated with local authorities to implement Covid-19 prevention and control measures, focusing on strictly controlling fishing vessels, preventing illegal entry, according to Lieutenant Colonel Bui Van Tung, a politician of Nha Trang Port Border Station.

In Quan Truong estuary area, the station has maintained 2 patrol teams since May to prevent illegal immigration by sea. Especially since July 3 when Hon Ro Port and some neighboring areas in Phuoc Dong Commune became Covid-19 hotspots, the station has enhanced forces and tightened inspection patrol in Quan Truong River estuary area, the section from Binh Tan Bridge downstream to the sea. The large area is the anchorage of many fishing vessels. The border guards and soldiers have maintained patrol throughout the day and night to prevent those in blockaded areas from escaping out by sea.

"Following the direction of Khanh Hoa Border Defense Headquarters and the Provincial Steering Committee for Human Disease Prevention and Control, Nha Trang Port Border Station has tightened entry and exit control measures, especially for those from pandemic-hit Thanh Phat, Thanh Dat and Hon Ro Port, Phuoc Dong Commune. All the border officials are determined to overcome difficulties and fulfill assigned tasks to meet dual goals of epidemic containment and border protection, according to Deputy Head of Nha Trang Port Border Station, Major Vo Van Viet, who directly commands 2 control teams in Quan Truong estuary area.

Inspection patrol boosted

Since 1 case of Covid-19 infection was detected in Quarter 3 Tri Nguyen, Vinh Nguyen Ward on August 5, the station's officers and soldiers have taken more duties. In addition to strengthening inspection patrols to prevent vehicles that fail to meet epidemic prevention and control and people from entering and leaving the island when not really necessary during the social distancing, the station has joined inspection at the blockade checkpoint in Quarter 3 Tri Nguyen and the checkpoint on Tri Nguyen Island pier.

Captain Nguyen Quang Thanh, Head of Tri Nguyen Border Guard Station, Nha Trang Port Border Guard Station said, "We have coordinated with local forces, especially the police, self-managed groups, community-based Covid response teams to improve public compliance with the Directive 16; strengthened inspection and control of vehicles at sea; and urged people to remain home except for essential needs. Thereby, the residents have well complied with Covid-19 restriction regulations."

Moreover, cadres and soldiers of Tri Nguyen Border Guard Station have also combined effort with self-managed groups and community-based Covid response teams to ensure supply of necessities for locals. Especially, Tri Nguyen Border Guard Station has also cooperated with local forces to run the model “bringing markets to islands” to ensure supply of daily necessities for locals as well as report those in need of assistance to local authorities. According to Lieutenant Colonel Bui Van Tung, in addition to propaganda, the unit is strengthening forces and improving equipment for patrol at sea to effectively tackle Covid-19 and illegal immigration and export.
