In September and October, Khanh Hoa Red Cross offered nearly 800 rescue life jackets to fishermen in coastal areas, supporting them to stay safe at sea and cling to traditional fishing grounds.
Pham Huy Hoang, Ba Ngoi Ward, is one of 160 fishermen in Cam Ranh City having received a rescue life jacket. During 5 years offshore fishing, his ship has encountered bad weather with rough sea and high waves many times. The rescue life jacket helps stay safe and be prepared for the unexpected at sea during fishing trips.
Tran Tuan Hung in Vinh Truong Ward, is among 500 fishermen in Nha Trang City having been offered a rescue life jacket with numerous safety features very helpful for fishermen. It has several accessories for first aid, to keep warm as well as contain food to survive in tough water conditions and during accidents, especially during off-shore fishing trips.
Le van Hoa, Chairman of Khanh Hoa Red Cross said the rescue life jacket offer program launched by Truong Tan Sang, former State President to support poor fishermen is to reduce risks and assure safety at sea during fishing, especially in rainy and stormy seasons. This is a special kind of life jackets, consisting 13 accessories worth VND1.4 million with first aid kits to help fishermen survive emergencies in cases of storms and water-related accidents for several days.
Together with offering life jackets, over the past years, Khanh Hoa Red Cross at all levels has implemented many disaster preparedness and response activities worth VND12 billion/ year. Accordingly, every year, the Red Cross at all levels in cooperation with the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue provides training and propagandizes skills and knowledge on disaster resilience and preparedness for nearly 2,000 people; and seeks for donations as emergency aid for affected people; jointly with relevant agencies support the evacuation, search and rescue of natural disaster victims, including fishermen.
Present at the life jacket offer event in Cam Ranh in early October, Nguyen Tan Tuan, Deputy Secretary of Khanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee encouraged fishermen to continue clinging to their fishing grounds and protecting the national maritime sovereignty; and urged fishermen to abide by Covid-19 prevention and control regulations. The Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee called for more contribution from cadres, organizations and individuals in the province to help those in need, including fishermen to overcome difficulties and stabilize life.
Under the program, 1,000 fishermen and fisheries resource surveillance force are expected to be offered rescue life jackets, including 200 to Van Ninh District, 10 to Cam Lam District, 100 to Ninh Hoa Town, 500 to Nha Trang City, 160 to Cam Ranh City and 30 to Khanh Hoa fisheries resource surveillance force. Fishermen in Nha Trang, Cam Ranh and Ninh Hoa have received the rescue life jackets. The remaining will be given by the provincial Red Cross from now to the end of this year.
