The reconstruction of Xom Bong Bridge (Nha Trang City) is scheduled to start in the 4th quarter/2021 and its bidding is currently underway.

Damaged due to long-term use

Situated on the National Highway 1C, Xom Bong Bridge is managed and maintained by the Department of Transport under the authorization of the Ministry of Construction. Xom Bong Bridge, 309m in length, with 15 spans has been put into use since 1969. Its 10th span was damaged by American bombing in April 1975. Though already repaired, the bridge is now in a run-down condition. Therefore, vehicles’ loading capacity is required to cut down to assure safety.

The reconstruction of Xom Bong Bridge is scheduled to start in the 4th quarter/2021.

In 1985, the Ministry of Construction provided funding and materials for the repair. Khanh Hoa People’s Committee assigned the Department of Construction to design and make repairs. The bridge was reopened to traffic on January 25, 1986.

The bridge has become decrepit after over 50 years of use and already undergone several repairs, resulting in some travel obstruction. Therefore, the bridge reconstruction is vital. The project has been approved in principle since 2015. The work is under the planning of innovation of decrepit bridges and travel connection on National Highways (1st phase), using loans provided by South Korea. The project remained undeveloped until late 2020.

Scheduled to start in 4th quarter/2021

In late November 2020, the investor conducted ground geophysical surveys for the project. The Provincial People's Committee has agreed to assign Nha Trang City Land Fund Development Center to perform compensation and clearance work. The center will give a land withdrawal notice as a basis for compensation and resettlement support for affected residents.

Reportedly, 1.27ha of land is due to be revoked and 14 cases will be affected. The Ministry of Transport’s Project Management Board 2 (investor) has completed the construction staking and handed it over to the Land Fund Development Center. The center has cooperated with affected agencies to survey the volume of relocation; and proposed relocation plan at the project site. The center has also had a contract on cadastral measurements for the project.

The old bridge will be demobilized and replaced by a new one. The Department of Transport will redirect traffic to facilitate travel and assure traffic safety during the construction. Although scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2021, the construction did not begin until now due to Covid-19 impacts and other objective factors.

Nguyen Van Dan, Director of the Department of Transport says the construction bidding for Xom Bong Bridge is underway. The preparation process has been basically completed and the construction is scheduled to start in the 4th quarter/2021. The Department of Transport has been assigned by the Provincial People’s Committee to cooperate with other agencies to accelerate the project development process.

The Project Management Board 2 is assigned by the Ministry of Construction to develop Xom Bong Bridge project. The new bridge is nearly 330m long and 19m wide with 4 lanes to match the National Highway 1C design. The new one is 6m downstream from the old location. The estimated cost for the bridge construction and site clearance is VND250 billion.
