Launched in July 2019, the plastic-free campaign has further expanded by Khanh Hoa Women’s Union with  efficient models and propaganda via mass media.

Practical activities

In June 2021, Khanh Hoa People’s Committee approved the project “Women in Khanh Hoa join action against plastic waste, period 2021 - 2025” and Khanh Hoa Women’s Union was assigned to develop the project. The project targets by 2025,  100% of the Union officials and 85% members’ families will have had access to basic knowledge about environmental protection; 100% of grassroots associations will have developed at least 1 environmental protection model or campaign against plastic waste based on actual conditions; 3 models "Say no to single-use plastic products and limit the use of plastic bags" will have been implemented on Tri Nguyen Island (Nha Trang City), Binh Ba Island (Cam Ranh City), Diep Son Island Village (Van Ninh District) and so on.

The models “Green house” and “VND100 house” are being effectively developed to collect waste to protect the environment as well as raise funds to help members in need. The model has proved effective in Nha Trang City, Cam Ranh City, Dien Khanh District, Van Ninh District, Khanh Son District and Ninh Hoa District.

Cao Thi Hien, Chairperson of Khanh Son District Women’s Union said to improve awareness of environmental conservation and waste pollution reduction by limiting single-use and disposable plastics, in 2020, the Union piloted the “Green house” with steel frames and corrugated iron roofing put in public places in Ba Cum Bac Commune for residents to the throw plastic waste in. The model has proved effective after 1 year of operation and thus 8/8 communities have registered to run the model. 10 “green houses” have been set up in the district, raising VND9 million since the beginning of the year.

In Cam Loc Ward, Cam Ranh City, the model “Receiving medical face masks in exchange for plastic waste” developed by the ward Women’s Union has contributed to raising public awareness of environmental protection and Covid-19 prevention and control.

Nguyen Thi Minh Anh, Chairperson of the ward Women’s Union said the model has received much support from local residents. This is a satisfactory signal for the Union cadres and members to promote their roles in environmental conservation.

Furthermore, the model on “taking shopping baskets to the store” has also been effectively implemented. The Women’s Union at all levels self-fund and seek donations every year to offer shopping baskets to local residents. “The shopping baskets are useful and help limit the unnecessary use of plastic bags,” said Nguyen Kieu Ngoc Nga, Vinh Phuoc Ward, Nha Trang City.

Efficiency expanding

The Youth Union at all levels has implemented various innovative and flexible models in response to the plastic-free campaign. In 2020, the Women’s Union members collected more than 15 tons of trash; offered over 2,600 shopping baskets and 1,000 thermoses and glass bottles to the needy; and hang up 120 banners drawing the participation of over 125,000 members and women.

The Union at all levels has founded and maintained effective models with 8 locations for collecting scraps to raise funds for the needy, 27 “green houses” for  collecting pesticide containers after used; 6 self-managed waste collection groups, 3 units implementing the model on reducing the use of disposable plastic, contributing to enhancing green living habits, maintaining urban cleanliness for a green, clean and beautiful environment.

The Provincial Women’s Union will continue promoting propaganda and expanding community-based environmental protection models, enhancing  the roles of organizations and widely sharing the models via mass media, contributing to raising public awareness of the harms of plastic waste and gradually reducing the use of disposable plastics and replacing them with reusable, environmentally friendly products, according to Nguyen Quynh Nga, Chairperson of Provincial Women’s Union.
