Gathering making free traditional Vietnamese rice cakes

Traditional Tet values
 
On the morning of January 28 or the 26th day of the Lunar New Year, women from 27 communes and wards in Nha Trang City gathered making traditional Vietnamese glutinous rice cakes at the Cultural House in Ngoc Hoi Village, Vinh Ngoc Commune. All ingredients, including rice, green beans, pork and banana leaves, etc. had been prepared earlier. All the women were excited to join the volunteering work.

Nguyen Thi Thuy Thuy, Chairman of Vinh Phuoc Ward Women’s Union said, for many years, the city Women’s Union has organized exchange activities to cook traditional Vietnamese cakes for members in financial hardship, orphans and soldiers on far-off islands. I am so happy to join such a meaningful activity.”
Joining the cake wrapping activity for the first time, Do Thi Hai Hoa, a member of Phuong Son Ward says, “My husband has been paralyzed for 8 years. I am so grateful for the help and encouragement of other members, I myself feel happy to be able to help others whose life is more struggling.”
 
According to Nguyen Quynh Nga, Chairperson of Provincial Women's Union, the program of cooking banh chung launched by the Women’s Union has attracted the participation of  all members. The event aims to honor Tet traditional values, partly sharing difficulties with policy beneficiaries and poor families for a happy Lunar New Year. On the morning of the 26th day of the last lunar month, all Union affiliations in the province organized the event of cooking traditional rice cakes.”

Delivering cakes to the vulnerable 
 
At a resettlement area in Ba Cum Bac Commune, Khanh Son District, women from the Military Headquarters, Youth Union and Women’s Union of the district were busy wrapping and cooking Tet cakes for the poor. Cao Thi Hien, Chairperson of the District Women’s Union said, the prolonged Covid-19 pandemic has had impacts on everyone’s life, especially the poor and those under the coronavirus-related lock-down.

The Women’s Union has cooked and offered over 400 chung cakes to the poor and those under the coronavirus-related lock-down areas. Receiving New Year gifts with chung cakes, Mau Thi Diem, Son Lam Commune said, “We are grateful and moved to receive the care from Son Lam Commune Women’s Union. We will try our best to overcome difficulties and bring up children to become successful members of the society.”
 
“The meaningful activity will continue in following years as it honors traditional Tet values together with humanitarian commitment. Next year, we are planning to organize a cake cooking competition to enhance the ambience,” said Nguyen Quynh Nga.
