The Museum of Oceanography is having a stamp collection digitized scheduled to complete on the occasion of the 100th foundation anniversary (September 14, 1922 - 2022) in order to introduce stamps displaying marine life as well as promote stamp storage and facilitate data tracking.

Unique collection of stamps

The Museum of Oceanography is holding more than 16,000 stamps themed marine life, biodiversity, etc. This is part of a stamp collection by Professor, PhD. Yasuwo Fukuyo, a former lecturer of Tokyo University (Japan), a famous stamp collector with more than 30,000 stamps. In 2015, Yasuwo Fukuyo offered part of the stamp collection to the Museum of Oceanography with the desire to share and inspire the passion for stamp collection and the love for the nature, the sea and cultures of different countries to visitors to the Museum. This is s special collection, contributing to diversifying materials and photos of the sea in general and aquatic wildlife in particular at the museum.

According to  PhD. Truong Si Hai Trinh, Chief of the Department of Communication and Environmental Education, Institute of Oceanography, the collection has many special stamps about Vietnam's marine life, showcasing thousands of fish species. This is really a unique set of stamps, showing the depth of marine knowledge and passion for the ocean. "Each stamp tells us a story about a certain marine species, helping us to discover the diverse marine world, understand more about our ancestors’ contribution and inspire the love for the nature.

Digitalization for further promotion

The large and diverse collection of stamps was displayed once at the Museum of Oceanography on the occasion of the Sea Festival 2019 and awarded a record for the largest collection of stamps about Vietnam’s marine life, consisting of 890 stamps. The Institute of Oceanography has built a scientific technical research project on "Building a database and digitizing stamp sets of the Institute of Oceanography for data tracking and communications" by PhD. Truong Si Hai,  implemented in the 2 years 2021-2022.

For digitalization, postage stamps are scanned at required resolutions and adjustments. The data about stamps are based on original information from collectors and additional information according to international practices (specified by specialized websites). The database of stamp sets will be stored in Excel format, including stamp code, original album, page number, place of issue, year of issue, stamp name, English name and so on.

The researchers have digitalized 18 albums of stamps, containing 8,000 stamps featuring 9 groups of creatures, nearly 3,000 species collected in 190 different locations worldwide. Notably, the block of stamps includes information bout the origin and the main collector, Professor, Dr. Yasuwo Fukuyo. The block also introduces  11 sets of stamps with different themes such as sea turtles, rays, sharks, crustaceans, corals, reef fish, snails, echinoderms, poisonous creatures, whales and marine plants. In addition, the website also introduces the collection of 152 stamps with 11 themes and 8 typical stamp sets at http://tem.baotanghdh.vn.

The digitization of the postage stamps is to promote the institute and marine biodiversity; serve storage and data tracking. The research team is striving to complete the work on the occasion of the 100th foundation anniversary of the Institute of Oceanography, according to PhD. Hoang Xuan Ben, Deputy Director of the Institute of Oceanography.
