Khanh Hoa Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases Hospital was established with 150 beds in June 2000. Apart from the treatment of tuberculosis and lung diseases, Khanh Hoa Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases Hospital when converted to the Makeshift Hospital No. 2 during the Covid-19 crisis has fulfiled Covid-19 treatment and health care tasks.

Effort in the fight against Covid-19

When Covid-19 cases started to rise in Vietnam, under the direction of the Department of Health, Khanh Hoa Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases Hospital established a Covid-19 treatment facility in April 2020. In early July 2021, due to the Covid-19 surge, the Provincial People's Committee decided to establish the 100-bed Makeshift Hospital No. 2 at the Provincial Hospital of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease for patients with moderate and mild Covid-19 symptoms. At first, the hospital faced many difficulties in terms of human resources and medical equipment. However, thanks to the medical staff’s effort together with the support of the Department of Health, medical facilities and sponsors, the operation of the Makeshift  Hospital No. 2 has gradually been stabilized, helping cure many Covid-19 patients.

Along with Covid-19 treatment, approved by the Department of Health, the Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Hospital has continued maintaining outpatient and inpatient care for tuberculosis patients.

Since its foundation, the Makeshift  Hospital No. 2 has treated more than 3,660 Covid-19 patients, 3,300 of whom have been recovered and the rest have been transferred to the higher level care. On August 9, 2021, the Provincial People's Committee issued a decision to set up a 500-bed makeshift treatment facility No. 2 located at Khanh Hoa University dormitory under the Makeshift  Hospital No. 2.

Dr. Huynh Minh Tam, Deputy Director in charge of the Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Hospital, Director of the Makeshift  Hospital No. 2 said, “The makeshift  treatment facility No. 2 received more than 400 patients within the first 2 days of opening. When the number of severe cases kept on increasing, to ensure prompt emergency care and treatment of Covid-19 patients, the Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Hospital opened a 10-bed intensive care unit in December 2021, thanks to the support of the Department of Health and the Provincial General Hospital, helping save lives of critically ill patients." A 50-year-old patient named Nguyen Van An in Nha Trang City said, “I got sick with Covid-19 at the end of December. I was hospitalized when I started to suffer from symptoms of shortness of breath after 3 days of care at home. I was recovered and discharged from hospital after more than 10 days of hospitalization.”

Along with the treatment, the Makeshift Hospital No. 2 also supported patient transportation for other medical facilities; and mobilized 1 private ambulance. The hospital also established a fundraising team to receive aid, including necessities, supplies and medical equipment, from organizations, individuals, businesses, departments and agencies for the care and treatment of Covid-19 patients.

Tuberculosis control measures fulfiled

Along with Covid-19 treatment, approved by the Department of Health, the Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Hospital has continued maintaining outpatient and inpatient care for tuberculosis patients; establishing a 50-bed inpatient treatment facility, ensuring uninterrupted implementation of the provincial tuberculosis control program.

The Tuberculosis Lung Diseases Hospital has the functions of examining and treating tuberculosis and lung diseases and providing consultancy for the Department of Health to manage the Anti-Tuberculosis Program and the Project for Patients with Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases in the province.

Since its establishment, the Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases Hospital has well performed its assigned tasks; applied advanced techniques in medical treatment such as rapid diagnosis of tuberculosis bacteria and Rifampicin (Gene Xpert) resistance; BACTEC/MGIT liquid culture system; LED-based fluorescence Sputum microscopy, bronchoscopy, etc.

Every year, the rate of treatment completion and recovery reaches more than 95%, 10% higher than the target set by the National Anti-Tuberculosis Program (>85%); the rate of tuberculosis treatment discontinuation accounts for 0.07%, much lower than the national rate (from 2-4%); and tuberculosis mortality rate per 100,000 people is 1.2. Particularly, the hospital deploys 2 treatment regimens of 20 months and 9 months. The treatment time is shortened while the recovery rate rises to more than 87%, contributing to reducing dangerous tuberculosis transmission.

With the achievements in tuberculosis control, the Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases Hospital has received certificates of merit by the Ministry of Health and Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee, and the Department of Health. In 2021 alone, the Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases Hospital staff and 1 individual were presented a certificate of merit by the Prime Minister; 5 groups and 42 individuals received certificates of merit by the Provincial People’s Committee for their achievements in Covid-19 prevention and control.

The hospital has planned to continue maintaining achievements in Covid-19 prevention control; and applying advanced techniques in the treatment of tuberculosis and lung diseases in 2022.
