The Museum of Oceanography (Institute of Oceanography) has boosted environmental propaganda via traditional methods and social media. Such activities have proved effective and meaningful, especially for students.

When Covid-19 has temporarily subsided, sightseeing activities at Museum of Oceanography have resumed, welcoming hundreds of visitors, mainly students, every day on their research and sightseeing tours. According to PhD. Truong Si Hai Trinh, Chief of the Department of Environmental Communication and Education, Institute of Oceanography, environmental propaganda and education are among the main activities of the institute to raise visitors, especially students’ awareness of environmental preservation and marine bio-diversification protection.

The institute has cooperated with more than 20 schools in Nha Trang City to organize sightseeing tours, introducing artifacts, marine life and scientific research of the institute, integrating sightseeing with providing knowledge about the conservation of marine life and ecosystems; harmful impacts of plastic waste, etc. During the Covid-19 outbreak, besides direct communication, the museum has developed 3 communication channels, including the website at baotanghdh.vn; Fanpage: vi-vn.facebook.com and Instagram: instagram.com/baotanghaiduonghoc.
 
The website of  Museum of Oceanography introduces 5, 000m2 aquaria with more than 300 marine creatures such as sea turtles, sharks, rays, coral reefs and a wide variety of ornamental fish; exhibition of 23,000 samples of 5,000 sea creatures together with many articles by marine experts. Its fanpage with lively videos and articles is an effective tool of communication, attracting over 45,000 visits and 17,000 likes so far. The newly-created Instagram has many photos, videos and articles, earninng much interaction, introducing biological characteristics of sea creatures for teachers and students’ reference.
 
Boosting cooperation
 
The environmental education and propaganda of the Museum of Oceanography has expanded, especially to schools. Nguyen Van Troi High School has organized many tours themed marine diversification for students. This is a good chance for them to learn from reality and develop their self-learning skills. The school plans to cooperate with the institute to build organize study tours, said Huynh Vinh Khang, Principal of Nguyen Van Troi High School, Nha Trang.
 
Duong Thi Hong Hiep, Principal of Vinh Nguyen 1 Primary School (Nha Trang City) said that over the years, the school has focused on coordinating with other agencies, including the Museum of Oceanography to organize several practical activities such as thematic talks, biodiversity protection, extracurricular classes, etc. In the coming time, the school will continue closely coordinating with other agencies, especially the Institute of Oceanography and the Naval Academy to raise awareness of the national sovereignty over the sea and islands; teachers and students’ responsibility for protecting the marine environment and conserving the nature and biodiversity; organizing study tours and contests; and joining effort to protect the marine environment.
