“This is the first time I have joined such an extracurricular activity far from home for such a long time. I am guided to keep my personal stuff and space clean and organized, do the laundry and the washing-up after meals. The daily routine helps me have a good health and more energy.”

Joining the program for the second time, Vo Gia Thinh (a 5th grader), much younger than many other participants, did not have many problems with such personal chores as washing clothes, washing dishes and keeping personal stuff neat and clean. I like community activities and military picnic the most. We can learn swimming and martial arts as well,” he said.

This is the 7th time  the “Semester in army” program has been held for children and teenagers in summer. The event took place at the Battalion 460 for 7 days, drawing 124 participants aged 8-17. The military program provided military experience and life skills training such as farming; fire prevention and control, survival skills, healthy lifestyles, social work together with tours to military units, learning about emotional values and so on.

Teacher Cao Xuan Vu, Skill Department, Ly Tu Trong Youth Union School in Ho Chi Minh City, a member of the organizing board says the program was to provide essential life skills for children and teenagers such as community teamwork and public speaking to help them more well-prepared for independent life. Besides, they also learned emotional values and how to share sentiments with their family members.

According to Bui Hoai Nam, Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union, the “Semester in army” program is held every year to provide fun and skill training for kids and teenagers. This is a valuable period for them to learn, practice, widen their knowledge and develop life skills which are updated every year to suit participants’ interests and needs, bringing great benefits and efficiency.
