Swimming classes at inflatable pools have drawn many young learners, helping enhance drowning prevention among kids

Every summer afternoon, inflatable pools at Xuan Lac Village Cultural House, Vinh Ngoc Commune, Nha Trang City are full of kids having fun and learning how to swim. Phan Thi Xuan, the mother of 5-year-old Ho Phan Thanh Dung registered for a 1-month swimming class for her kid at Xuan Lac Village Cultural House. Taking the class, the child has become more active. Besides improving communication skills, she can develop water safety habits and enhance health.

Le Hon Da, a teacher of physical education at Hoang Van Thu High School, Nha Trang City has installed inflatable pools for swimming classes for kids at Xuan Lac Cultural House. The classes open twice a day at 5:00 and 17:00, attracting some 30 children in Vinh Ngoc Commune. The inflatable pools have simple structures with steel frames, canvas and water filter that are easily resembled and moved. Since 2019, every summer, Teacher Le Hon Da rents a place in the cultural house for such swimming classes. Drowning often occurs in the province, especially in rainy seasons mainly due to the lack of water survival skills. Therefore, the teacher hopes there will be more and more water safety classes to provide essential life skills to prevent drowning among children.
Khanh Vinh Town Youth Union Executive Committee has also cooperated with the Junior High School's Youth Union to open swimming classes in inflatable pools at Khanh Vinh Junior High School at 8:00 every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. One teacher is in charge of a class for 8-15 year olds, teaching basic water-safety knowledge and skills with swimming techniques, namely butterfly, dolphin stroke, backstroke and first-aid skills.
According to Nguyen Thi Phuong Huyen, Secretary of Vinh Ngoc Commune Youth Union, besides the swimming classes, under the direction of the People’s Committees of Khanh Hoa Province and Nha Trang City, the Summer Steering Board of Vinh Ngoc Commune People’s Committee has continued propaganda for kid drowning prevention and control during summer via radio broadcasts and portals of the Commune Youth Union; and maintained drowning prevention and control activities. Besides developing water safety skills, the swimming classes also provide an environment for kids to have fun and develop communication skills and health for a safe rewarding summer break.
Nha Trang City People’s Committee has also issued a plan to implement a swimming program for drowning prevention and control, period 2021 – 2030 in the city, focusing on promoting propaganda, education and social mobilization to raise awareness, knowledge and skills to keep safe in the water; improving the capacity of public servants, cadres, instructors, collaborators and guides on prevention and control of child accidents, injuries and drowning; implementing child drowning prevention activities and so on.
